LIV’ING ON A PRAYER

EAST PALESTINE, OH- On each team, there’s a spark.  An igniter, of sorts that keys the team to their rise, or able to put the team on their back and take them to the next level.  This season, Senior Liv Figley provided plenty of shine on the court as the Bulldogs and their fans were served a great season in 2019.

Although the Lady Bulldogs landed short of their goal, it wasn’t due to a lack of hard work and dedication.  Much of that attitude and swagger came from the front lines and the hard-swinging, high-flying, fist-pumping heartbeat of the Brown and White that is Liv Figley.

While on the court she is an elite competitor, off the court she’s a caring young lady who puts other’s needs and wants ahead of herself.   Our Tim Figley sits down in a family reunion of sorts to talk with the Bulldog Senior in this week’s East Palestine Player Profile: LIV’ING ON A PRAYER.

POTTERS TAKE BACK TURKEY BOWL FROM TIGERS

WELLSVILLE, OH- Just two miles of Ohio St. Rt. 7 separate Wellsville and East Liverpool’s communities, and while the bus ride for tonight’s game was a short one, the time in between football games between the two schools was large. 1964 was the last time these southern Columbiana County neighbors faced off on the gridiron. That year the top-rated show on television was The Munsters, I Want to Hold Your Hand was the No. 1 song on the charts, and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees for a World Series title.

In what used to be called the Turkey Bowl – because the two teams always faced off on Thanksgiving Day – the Potters came away with a 48-15 win at Nicholson Stadium on Senior Night for the Tigers. The Potters got things started off quickly in the first quarter with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Nick Woodyard to Timmy Neal. The Tigers responded with a six-minute drive of their own that saw quarterback Troy Carter take it in from the 1-yard line to tie things up. East Liverpool would score the next three touchdowns before Jason Tice hit pay dirt from two yards out to make the score 27-15 with 49 seconds to go in the first half. On the Potter’s next drive, Draven Crow forced a fumble giving the Tigers a first and goal inside the 10-yard line. Unfortunately, the Tigers couldn’t capitalize and went into the half with a 12-point deficit.

The second half was all East Liverpool as the Potters scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter to cap off scoring for the night. The Potters all-time leading rusher Derek Carter had a night to remember as he gained 319 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. Woodyard had 107 yards and a touchdown on the ground as well. For the Tigers, Jason Tice had 45 yards and a touchdown out of the backfield, and Troy Carter went 14/27 with 130 yards through the air.

Both teams finish the year at 5-5 and out of playoff contention.

INDIANS FAIR WELL AGAINST BEARS

SALINEVILLE, OH- Leetonia came into tonight’s contest (6-3) after a big win against United. Southern Local came into the game undefeated (9-0) after beating Wellsville.

The first quarter belonged all to Southern as they put up 31 points. During the first, the Indian’s quarterback Jayce Sloan would throw three touchdowns and Cam Grodhaus would rush for one touchdown. The second quarter would still be scoreless for the Bears as Grodhaus would take a punt 40 yards for a touchdown to end the half and put the Indians up 43-0.

To start the second half, both teams would score only once. Leetonia’s Marco Ferry would have a 59-yard rushing touchdown to give the Bears their only score on the night. For the Indians, H. Morris would have a 65-yard rushing touchdown to end the game 50-7 as Southern wins.

Southern will end their seasons undefeated (10-0) as Leetonia will lose and end with a season record of (6-4).

EAST PALESTINE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 9) WITH TONY FOSTER

Week ten will be the final game of the regular season for East Palestine and they will look to play spoiler as they will host the Columbiana Clippers Friday night. The Clippers will be coming into this game currently sitting in the #7 seed in Division 6, a loss to the Bulldogs will most likely end their season without a playoff birth.
