CAMPBELL ONE WIN AWAY FROM CONFERENCE CROWN

CAMPBELL OH- A big game inside The MVAC Gray Division took place on Tuesday night. #1 Campbell-Memorial Red Devils hosted #5 Liberty for their second matchup with The Leopards this year.

The first time these two squared off was back on January 11th. The Red Devils snuck away with a road victory that day 61-59.

However, other than LaBrae, Liberty was the only conference team to challenge Campbell this year. Going into Tuesday night, much of the same was expected in round two of Liberty vs. Campbell.

Both teams started off strong defensively, with points being at a premium in the first quarter. Campbell took a lead late in the first quarter, and extended it to 15-11 with a Deshaun Will buzzer-beater three to end the 1st.

The lead Campbell had was one that they held throughout the first half. Liberty never faltered, staying within striking distance of The Red Devils at all times. A Jameer Weaver bucket to beat the halftime buzzer extended The Devils lead to ten points 34-24 at halftime.

The Leopards came out of the third quarter with a fury. Backed by some impressive scoring by senior D’Andre Venters. Including some great passing by Venters, he was a spark plug to start the second half for Liberty.

Liberty outscored Campbell 23-10 in the third to take a 47-44 lead over The Red Devils after three. The spark ran out of gas however, as The Leopards only scored 10 points in the fourth to flip the script, as Campbell won the fourth quarter 23-10 and won the game 67-57.

Kevin Moore had another 20+ point performance as he continues to inch his way to the 1000 point milestone. D’Andre Venters shined for Liberty, scoring 23 points on the night, as he haunted The Red Devil defense.

Campbell had balanced scoring on the night, with all five starters contributing eight or more points of offense. In all those contributions, it was Xavion Leonards stat line that stood out the most!

Xavion Leonard: 16 PTS  7 REB  5 AST  3 STL  4 BLK  8/15 FG (53%)

Contributing in multiple areas of the game, Leonard’s 16 points were second highest on the team for the night. The 5 assists and 4 blocks lead the team, while 7 rebounds were tied for the team lead with Kevin Moore.

Being present in the five major stat categories in basketball was more than enough to earn Xavion Leonard YSNs Player of The Game!

The win for Campbell (18-1) gives them a perfect 11-0 record in the conference. For Liberty (13-5) they will fall to 9-2 in conference play. The win for The Red Devils leaves them just one win away from at least a shar of The MVAC Gray Crown!

#5 Liberty (13-5) will host Champion (3-15) on Thursday, February 10th.

#1 Campbell (18-1) will play their final road game of the regular season, as they travel to Newton Falls (10-7) on Friday, February 11th in their first battle with The Tigers.

BOARDMAN WINS NINTH STRAIGHT OVER FITCH

AUSTINTOWN OH- Boardman and Austintown, two teams that are synonymous with one another. Rivals in every sport they encounter, The Spartans and The Falcons renewed it on a Tuesday night in Austintown.

Boardman came in leading their conference, while Fitch was looking to play spoiler to their rivals in conference championship hopes.

As most games are, both teams came out with a high intensity and energy with the student sections rocking for both teams.

With the heightened intensity of Austintown’s senior night, the roof was ready to blow off the top of the gymnasium.

Both teams came out jockeying for position on one another, scoring back and forth, looking to establish their offense.

The Spartans had to get out of the woods early on, as both Allen Underwood and Devin Sherwood were getting it going early for Fitch. Underwood finished with 15 points and Sherwood was Fitch’s leading score with 18.

However, despite the lead changes and the battling down the stretch, it was senior Trey DePietro’s play that stood out in the fourth.

Scoring 23 points on the night, including nailing down some last second free throws and going 8-9 behind the stripe,  DePietro was quite simply clutch.

Using his height and length, DePietro grabbed 12 boards on the night as well. Leading both teams in total points and rebounds was more than enough to earn him Player of the Game.

Anthony Hightower pitched in with 12 points of offense for The Spartans to help secure the 60-56 win over The Falcons.

The win marks now nine straight for Spartans Basketball against their rival, as their revenge from football season is complete!

Fitch (5-12) will look to turn it around against conference opponent Warren Harding (9-5) on Saturday, February 5th.

For Boardman (10-6) they get to battle Canfield (7-8) for the second time this year in a home matchup with The Cardinals. That game is set to take place Friday, February 4th.

With the impending bad weather, stay tuned to YSN for all local area matchup changes and cancellations!

SPRINGFIELD PASSES ROAD TEST TO STAY PERFECT

BERLIN CENTER OH- Springfield continued their dominance of the MVAC on Tuesday as they traveled to Western Reserve. Although it was not the offensive output we are used to seeing from the Tigers, they did plenty to win. They beat the Blue Devils 55-41.

The Tigers offense was as balanced as always. Three Tigers got into double figures. Beau Brungard led the way with 13 points. Both Adam Wharry, and Alex Rothwell were right behind him with 12 each. Sean Guerriero added an important 7.

The Blue Devils were paced by David Ashburn who cracked double digits with 10. David Altiere was on track with 9.

Both teams get back to action Friday as the Tigers stay on the road traveling to Jackson Milton. Western Reserve will return home to host McDonald.

GIRARD’S STRONG DEFENSE LEADS TO VICTORY

HUBBARD, Ohio –

Since 2006, the Hubbard Eagles (2-16) and Girard Indians (10-6) have matched up a total of twenty-one times, with Girard holding the series edge 11-10. While Hubbard dominated the early series matchups, Girard has since won nine of the last eleven.

Throughout those twenty-one faceoffs, five saw the game end within a single possession, and the early part of the ballgame looked like these two NE8 foes were heading down that road again. A back-and-forth first quarter of play ended with the Eagles ahead 15-13. Unfortunately for Hubbard, that fifteen-point effort was the highest point total they’d produce in a single quarter, while Girard was just getting started.

Dominating both on the glass and defensively, Girard heavily outrebounded Hubbard. Crashing the boards offensively provided the Indians with plenty of easy looks from the inside, while their rebounding efforts on the opposite end helped hold Hubbard to just five second quarter points.

Coming out of the break trailing by five, the Hubbard Eagles needed their senior star, Riley Heckert, to produce. Heckert would do so early, knocking down an opener jumper to draw Hubbard within just one, and adding on a pullup jumper late from around the elbow to leave the blue and white trailing by just three with a quarter to go.

Much as they have all season, Hubbard staggered throughout the final stanza. Turnovers and poor defense led to easy Girard looks for the Indians to put the game out of reach. Gus Johnson and Bobby Alejears would lead the way for Girard in the fourth, combining for twelve of the Indians sixteen points to give the Indians the win, 48-36.

HUBBARD:

Riley Heckert 17 points

Brody Snyder11 points

GIRARD:

Gus Johnson – 14 points

Bobby Alejears – 9 points

Thomas Cardiero – 8 points

Hubbard Falling to 2-9 in the conference, the Eagles will regroup and look to complete the season sweep of the South Range Raiders (4-13). Both teams will head into the matchup off of a loss.

Girard Securing a double-digit win total for the first time since the 2018-2019 season, the Girard Indians will head into Friday nights home matchup against the Poland Bulldogs (12-5), looking for revenge. These two programs last faced off January 7th in a game that the Bulldogs would win 63-53.
