BEAVERS HOLD OFF HUBBARD

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- Beaver Local fresh off their first loss of the season over the weekend returned home Wednesday night looking to right the ship.  The Beavers would right that ship defeating Hubbard in 4 sets 25-14, 24-26, 25-18, 25-18.

After getting out to a fast start and dispatching the Eagles quickly in the first set, the Beavers struggled to get anything going in the second set.  “Tonight may not have been our best outing of the season as we came out a little inconsistent”  Coach Sarah Lowe on her team’s early struggles.  Hubbard’s Sophomore laden lineup, led by outside hitter Peyton Slovesko, was able to keep the Eagles in the match by winning the very contested second set forcing the Beavers to regroup between sets.  Regroup is exactly what they did in the third set as Senior Grace Hill took over at the net on her way to a team-high 17 kills.   Brooke Talbot contributed as well for the winners with 9 kills and 11 assists.  Lowe noticed her front line contributions were the key to their success “Our front line hitters were able to come through and make up for some of our deficits tonight”.

Junior Emma Joseph lead the Beavers by setting up the front-line attack with 15 assists.  Hubbard’s Slovesko kept the Beavers’  defense busy trying to spark her team in the fourth set.  The Beaver Local defense answered the call led by Bailey Bowersock and Leah Riccardo with 18 and 13 digs respectively on their way to a victory.  After her team’s victory Coach Sarah Lowe is already looking forward to the future “  Moving forward we need to build our consistency to be able to meet our long term goals for the season”

The Beavers (6-1) will look quickly to gain that consistency as they hit the road visiting fellow Buckeye 8 foe Harrison Central on Thursday.

EAGLES UNSTOPPABLE FOR SHAW

HUBBARD, Ohio –
One week removed from securing their first win in school history against Cardinal Mooney, the Hubbard Eagles (3-0) played host to East Cleveland Shaw (0-2) in hopes of keeping their perfect record against the Cardinals intact.
TC Caffey continued his strong start to the season, scoring from fifty-six yards out just fifty-one seconds into the ballgame. After a quick three and out from the Shaw offense and a poor punt, Hubbard took over with the ball in plus territory. Just two plays later, Caffey had his second touchdown of the game in just under four minutes of play.
Both teams would swap scoreless drives before Hubbard would take over at their own twenty-yard line with just under two minutes to go in the 1st. Seven plays later and a healthy dosage of the Eagle run game, Caffey scampered into the endzone from twenty-six yards out for his third score of the night.
Hubbard would continue to dominate on both sides of the ball for the rest of the half. Caffey would score once more and junior quarterback, Nik Hendrix, tossed his first two scores of the season. Before it was all said and done, the Eagles would head into the locker room up 41-0.
With their comfortable lead, the Hubbard coaching staff opted to rest their starters for the rest of the night, and let some younger guys earn some valuable experience. Unfortunately for the blue and white defensive unit, they were unable to secure their first shutout since week three of last season but still picked up the victory, 47-14.

HUBBARD BREAKS THE STREAK, BEATS MOONEY FOR FIRST TIME

HUBBARD, Ohio –
Since 1961, the Hubbard Eagles and Cardinal Mooney Cardinals have faced off 14 times. For Cardinal Mooney, it has been nothing but pure domination of the series. With the majority of their matchups coming from their days as rival members of the Steel Valley Conference, the Cardinals came into the night with an unblemished record against the Eagles, outscoring them 366-72.
Looking for their first win in program history, Hubbard knew they were going to have to lead on their work horse, T.C. Caffey, and he delivered early. Through the first two Hubbard drives, Caffey touted the rock 12 times for just over 90 yards and got his Eagles out to an early 14-0 lead.
With momentum firmly on the side of the Eagles, the Mooney offense botched a snap and gave the ball back to Hubbard in plus territory. Just three plays later, Mooney finally caught a break, well, Davontae Miller created one, leveling a Hubbard ball carrier to create a turnover. Just three plays later, Miller would reach pay dirt from 23 yards out to cut Hubbard’s lead in half.
After forcing the Eagles to go 3 and out, Mooney would strike quickly once again. Sophomore quarterback, Ashton O’Brien, hit Daqua Douglas on a quick out from the backfield. With lots of green and a few blocker out in front of him, Douglas would take the ball up the Mooney sideline before cutting it back across to the opposite hash and winning a foot race to the endzone. A missed extra point left Mooney short of tying things up, 14-13.
Both teams would exchange trips into each other’s territory, but neither would come away with points, taking the score where it was into the half.
Coming out of half with the ball, Mooney would pick up one first down before being forced to punt the ball away to T.C. Caffey and Co. The Eagles ensuing drive, Caffey would carry the ball on 7 of the Eagles 8 plays, before capping their 72 yard drive off with an 8-yard touchdown run.
Answering the bell as they had done all night, Mooney’s first play from scrimmage on their next drive went for 31 yards into Hubbard territory. A couple Ashton O’Brien throws later and the Cardinals were in the endzone again, but, after missing their extra point earlier in the game, Mooney had to keep the offense out to try and go for 2. Looking to lean on their bell cow in Miller, Mooney turned and gave it to the senior power back, but would be stuffed at the goal line by the stout Hubbard front.
After stomping out the Mooney 2-point conversion attempt, Hubbard was able to hold on to their lead and secure their first victory over the catholic powerhouse in school history, 21-19.

CAFFEY SHATTERS RECORDS AS HUBBARD STARTS SEASON STRONG

HUBBARD, Ohio –
Coming into his senior campaign, TC Caffey is viewed as not only one of the top rushers in the Mahoning Valley, but one of the best running backs in the history of Hubbard Football.
Kicking off the season with an otherworldly performance, TC’s 33 carries for 456 yards and 5 TDs with a long run of 93 gives the senior captain the school rushing record for single game rushing yards, along with the longest touchdown in Hubbard history.
An obvious testament to how hard of a worker Caffey is, he would be the first one to tell you that none of it was possible without his offensive line. The Eagles offensive front consistently made holes big enough for their standout back to drive a semi-truck through.
Hubbard’s new look Wing-T offense is one that came with some doubts, but any critics were quickly hushed (myself included) in the Eagles 48-28 routing of the Division 6 Region 21 runner ups from last season, the Norwayne Bobcats.
Although they had no answer to stop the Eagles’ run game, Norwayne and Elijah Stanley managed to put together a good showing on the offensive side of the ball. Stanley threw for 201 yards and 2 TDs, while managing to muster 77 yards on the ground and another TD with his legs.
BIG PERFORMERS
HUBBARD:
TC Caffey: 33 carries, 456 yards (single game school record), 5 TDs, long rush of 93 yards (single game school record)
Yianni Hazimihalis: 4 carries, 83 yards, 1 TD
NORWAYNE:
Elijah Stanley: 201 passing yards, 77 rushing yards, 3 total TDs
UP NEXT
Hubbard: For the second week in a row, the Hubbard Eagles (1-0) will host a powerhouse program in a division lower than them. The Cardinal Mooney Cardinals (0-1) will head into Hubbard Memorial Stadium with an all-time record of 12-0 against the Eagles. Catch the action at 7:00 pm next Friday night on YSNLive.com.
Norwayne: After being walloped by TC Caffey and Co., the Norwayne Bobcats (0-1) will hit the road again in week 2 to take on the Canton Central Catholic Crusaders (1-0).

HUBBARD’S CLOCK STRIKES MIDNIGHT; AMAZING RUN ENDS

HUBBARD, Ohio

With the district title on the line, the Hubbard Lady Eagles were the away team on their own field as they took on the top seeded Marlington Dukes. The two teams faced off earlier in the season back on April the 23rd in a game that ended in favor of the Dukes, 10-9.

The Lady Eagles would jump all over the Dukes in the first two innings, plating 1 in the 1st followed by 4 in the 2nd to go out in front 5-0. Hubbard’s quick start was in large part of junior Haley Croyle. Her RBI single in the first followed by a bases clearing 3 run triple in the second accounted for 4 of the Eagles first 5 runs.

Dormant through the first 2 innings, the Marlington bats awoke with a vengeance in the bottom half of the 3rd. Audrey Miller’s 2 out RBI double plated the first run of the game for the Dukes before Emma Jackson would take one deep over the left field wall on the 8th pitch of the at bat to bring them within 2.

Striking back in the 4th, Sydney Bowser would smoke a single through the 6-5 hole, bringing across Gillian Ryser and Haley Croyle, both who reached via the hit by pitch. A messy bottom half of the inning would give two runs back to the Dukes. After a double and a single to start theDukes trip to the plate, a dropped third strike would allow the first runner to come across, while a wild pitch would plate the second Marlingtonrunner of the inning.

A scoreless 5th would set the stage for a back-and-forth ending to the Division 2 Hubbard district final. Starting off the 6th with a Grace Narkumdouble followed by a Gillan Ryser single, Croylestepped up to the dish with another RBI opportunity.

Croyle would promptly deliver with 2 strikes on her by crushing a no doubter over the scoreboard in left center field, extending the Lady Eagles lead to 10-5.

Needing to at least chip away at the Hubbard lead a little in the bottom half of the inning, the Dukes chose not for just a slice of the Eagle lead, but the whole thing. Marlington’s big inning would involve 2 errors as well as a hit by pitch to bring across their first run and move the Dukes to within 4.

After another hit by pitch would load the bases, freshman Audrey Miller lined a ball over the center field wall for a grand slam and tying the game at 10. The Dukes would later plate another run to take their first lead of the game thanks to aRBI double by Ava Collins.

Trailing for the first time of the day, Hubbard needed at least one to extend the game. A leadoff single by Bell O’Brien would start the Eagles on the right foot.

Kailah Gregory would then sacrifice herself to move pinch runer, Sydney Mansour, into scoring position. Lexi Nadjusak would then single up the middle to put runners on the corners and one away. Just a deep fly away from knotting things up, Grace Narkum would hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

Back-to-back outs to start the bottom of the 7th for the Dukes left Hubbard with a good chance to move into extras for the second game in a row. However, the top of Marlington’s lineup had a different plan in mind. Angela Cirone would single to left from the leadoff spot in the lineup before Maria Davis would hit a double over the left fielders head on the 9th pitch of the at bat to bring around the speedy Cirone and walk things off from the Dukes, picking up the District title 12-11.

MARLINGTON:

Audrey Miller – 2-for-4, 1 grand slam, 1 double, 5 RBIs, 2 runs scored

Angela Cirone – 3-for-4, 1 double, 3 runs scored, 1 stolen base

Emma Jackson – 3-for-4, 1 home run, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored

HUBBARD:

Haley Croyle 3-for-4, 1 home run, 1 triple, 7 RBIs, 2 runs scored

Grace Narkum 1-for-1, 1 double, 2 walks, 1 sac fly, 3 runs scored, 1 RBI

Sydney Bowser 1-for-3, 2 RBIs
