FALCONS TRIUMPH IN OVERTIME

Contributed By Noah Ricks

HOWLAND CENTER, OH – It was a crucial win-or-go-home scenario for both Jefferson and LaBrae. Both teams were fighting for something, the Falcons their first district title in school history, and the Vikings their second district title in three years. They would also both show what tournament basketball is all about. In a game that took overtime to finish, the Falcons would edge out LaBrae with just enough free throws to come out with the thrilling victory 72-69. Coach Rob Pisano thought his team made some mistakes down the stretch, but was pleased with how they ended the game.

“In the beginning of that game, they [LaBrae] played harder. They wanted it more than we did. Our guys settled down and settled in, and we didn’t play a great basketball game at all. People have seen us play. [But] I thought our guys played with unbelievable intensity and heart, and that was won by toughness down the stretch. They didn’t give up and hopefully we can play a little more of our basketball game Friday night. We’re going to bring some more of our offensive skills.”

Jefferson had some struggles with the Vikings in the first half as they struggled to shoot the ball, especially from downtown, which was their strong point throughout the season. Some quick transition points by LaBrae helped push them to an eleven-point lead in the second quarter. The Falcons, however, pushed it down to a 33-27 Viking game at intermission. Pisano thought that LaBrae was able to build up that lead thanks to those kinds of uncontested shots and misses. At halftime, he wanted his guys to get back to their game.

“I just told them that we really, honestly, couldn’t play any worse, not just shooting. They were in there complaining at halftime about the shots, and I said this game’s not about the shots. You gave them five uncontested layups, which is ten points, and two uncontested, wide-open threes, which was, again, 16 of the 33 free, and that’s what I told them. I said this is a defensive game and a rebounding game. It came down to that. We weren’t doing that in the first half, forget that we couldn’t score, you know, we struggled shooting the ball, and that’s exactly what I told them at halftime.’’

Thanks to Pisano’s halftime speech, the Falcons came storming out of the gate and would have a strong 22-13 third quarter, thanks to better rebounding and better shooting. It was a tight fourth quarter as both teams were exchanging quick buckets and free throws. That was in part thanks to both teams picking up the tempo. Jefferson had many opportunities to put the game away in regulation and overtime, but couldn’t capitalize on most of those chances. They, however, did it for good on their third chance in the overtime period, also thanks to the Falcons making 10 of 14 foul shots on the night for 71.4%. Pisano stressed some costly turnovers down the stretch in those final minutes.

“Well, we made a bunch of bone-headed plays, you can say it. We made bone-headed plays down the stretch in regulation, a couple of drives to the hoop when we didn’t need to, off-balance. Just bring the ball out and run something and hopefully they’ll learn from it. You know, our program, Jefferson’s program hasn’t been deep into the playoffs in about six or seven years, so, wow. These kids grew up watching it when that group in 2015 was [in it], so they learned something tonight, and you know something, the big thing is, we just survived, not playing the greatest game, but we survived in it.”

The Falcons improve to 18-6 with the victory. Brock Bean led all scorers with 20 points. Jefferson will play in the district final at Howland on Friday night against the winner of the Campbell-Middlefield Cardinal game tomorrow night. A team that has averaged around 73 points a game throughout the season, Pisano will bring his high-powered Falcons into battle with their potential opponent in hopes of winning Jefferson’s first district championship in school history on the boys’ side.

“We’re going to prepare the same as we would if we were playing any other game. We’re going to do the things. We’re going to try to improve defensive rebounding, we’re going to play solid defense, we’re going to try to get out and run and hopefully more shots fall Friday night. Hopefully we bring our offensive game that we have the potential to score 85 on any given night, and that wasn’t there tonight, so, really either team, it’s not like we’re going to prepare any different. We change defenses, we mix things up, and just, hopefully we’re making shots.”

LaBrae ends the regular season at 16-6 with the heartbreaking loss. Devin Carter led the Vikings with 18, with Tre-Von Drake behind at 17, and Blake Kahnell at 16. This will be the second year in a row that the Vikings have lost in the district semifinals. Losing six seniors to graduation in May, coach Chad Kiser will start preparing for next year in hopes of winning their second district title in four years.

HOWLAND COOLS OFF THE VIKINGS

Contributed By Noah Ricks

LEAVITTSBURG, OH – It was a Monday night out in Leavittsburg. Both Howland and LaBrae picked up first-round byes in their respective tournaments. This was the last regular season game for both squads. It was Howland, however, who would have the upper edge as the D2 school upended the D3 Vikings 56-38 on the road. Howland coach Dan Bubon enjoyed the fact that his team picked up a convincing 18-point victory over a respected area powerhouse like LaBrae.

“It’s a big win going into the tournament because we beat a really good program tonight. In the last 15 to 20 years, this is one of the best programs in the area. We knew we were going to be in for a fight tonight, and I’m really happy with the second half. Anytime you come here and win by double-digits, that’s a really good win going into the tournament.”

The Tigers would not be without their struggles in the first half, being down 12-4 at one point in the first quarter, but they kept themselves in the ball game thanks to key finishes down low and transition points off of turnovers. Despite some missed layups at some points in the contest, they put the ball in the hole when it mattered. They would keep the Vikings, who were playing their fourth game in six days, on their toes throughout that second half. Bubon was aware of his team’s mistakes, but was pleased with the adjustments.

“We finished inside better, but we still missed three or four layups in the second half. I thought we got some good looks in the first half and just missed and then had some careless turnovers, couldn’t get into a rhythm, but the defense is what did it. Anytime you hold a team like that to 38 points, you’re giving yourself opportunities to transition off of rebounds, off of steals, and that’s where we started to get some easy passes.’’

After Anthony Massucci made a three-pointer in the final seconds of the first half to tie the game up at 23-23, the Tigers went roaring from there. Thanks to guys like Massucci, Gabe Badea, and Alex Henry, they outscored the Vikings in the second half 33-15. Massucci, who went on a 12-point run in the fourth after being held to just three points in the first three quarters, would end the night with a triple-double with 15 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 assists. Bubon used the locker room adjustments to his advantage and thanked his defense for the big run in the final sixteen minutes.

“Just to relax on offense. Keep playing defense as hard as they were. At halftime, we were on our way to holding them to 46 points, and we ended up holding them to 38 points. If you do that, you have got a great chance to win. We played a bad half offensively. We thought if we relaxed and played our normal game, we would be ok.”

The Tigers end the regular season at 13-9 with the victory. They will have a first-round bye in the Division 2 Ashtabula District before playing in the Sectional Finals on Friday against the winner of the Struther-NDCL semi-final tomorrow night. Bubon and his team will head down to the Struthers Fieldhouse tomorrow night to scout and prepare.

“Well, we’re going to go watch the game tomorrow night at Struthers and see who wins. We have seen Struthers multiple times this year. We scrimmaged them. They’re a really good offensive team. They’ll be a great challenge, but NDCL, I’m sure they have a chance, because NDCL will come out of Cleveland and play a really tough schedule. They’re not going to roll over tomorrow night, so I’m sure it will be a good battle and we’ll see who we’ll play and go from there.”

Canfield ends the regular season at 15-5 with the loss. They will also have a first-round bye as they will host a Sectional Final on Friday against the winner of the Southeast-Waterloo semi-final. That game is part of the Division 3 Howland District and is slated for a 7:00 P>M. tip.

Postgame Interview With Dan Bubon:

UNITED OPENS UP THEIR TOURNAMENT RUN WITH A BANG

HANOVERTON OH- Coming into Wednesday night’s opening round matchup with Labrae, it could have been easy for United to be happy with a 16 win campaign and the title of league champs.

The Vikings found out quickly United is not yet satisfied with its accomplishments as the Eagles came out determined to add to that list on their way to a dominating 48-22 victory.

United controlled the game from the opening tip with a game plan to limit the Viking offense to one opportunity and clean the defensive glass each trip down the floor. That game plan worked, coupled with a smothering 2-3 zone, the Labrae offense could only generate two transition layups as United raced out to a 13-4 lead after the first quarter. “ Rebounding has been a challenge for us all year, we know if we can rebound then we are tough to beat. The girls did a great job on both ends of the floor crashing the offensive glass for 2nd chance opportunities, while we held Labrae to 1 and done”” explained United coach Josh Sigler.

The beginning of the second quarter began with much of the same narrative as United reeled off six straight points increasing their lead to 19-4 on their way to a 25-11 lead at the intermission. The defense of the Eagles stepped up keeping the Labrae offense searching for open looks all night. “ Our last couple games we have been setting goals on the defensive end for the girls to achieve. Their intensity has increased, they are communicating more, and it is starting to pay off” said Sigler. The defense kept Labrae sharp shooting guard Laura McCoy in check the entire evening as McCoy could only muster a team high 9 points. The size of the Eagles proved too much for the Vikings in the end as well.

Coming out of the locker room the Eagles used that size often in the second half lead by Junior Taylor Cope. Cope controlled the game inside the rest of the way as the Junior contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles to victory. The balanced attack of United saw Grace Knight pour in 11 points while Grayson Kidder contributed 12 points off the bench. The United head coach knew how much this opening game at home meant to his program “Anytime you win a tournament game it can be a confidence builder for your team. We talked about what a great opportunity we had with possibly playing two games at home vs two quality opponents. The girls were very excited for the opportunity to compete on their home floor.”

Following the victory Wednesday night the focus quickly turned to what lies ahead for the Eagles in Saturday’s Sectional Final. United is set to meet Ursuline for the second time in just 11 days. The first game saw the Eagles come out on top 51-46 in overtime, but the United head coach knows his team must be ready for the rematch, “Ursuline is a very athletic / active team that had us beat the first time. We were very fortunate to win that game, our rebounding and ability to take care of the basketball must improve this time around if we are to come out victorious and move on in the tournament.”

The rematch is set for the Sectional Final as United vs Ursuline is slated for Saturday at 1pm in Hanoverton.
