QUAKERS FALL SHORT AGAINST CRUSADERS

SALEM OH- n a matchup of two talented teams, and two special quarterbacks, it was the Canton Central Catholic Crusaders and Jack Talkington who were able to get the better is Jackson Johnson and the Salem Quakers on Friday night by a score of 35-31.

In a game that went back and forth all night long, it was CCC who got the last lead change and we’re able to seal the deal on a late interception and run just enough clock off to make it nearly impossible for a Quaker comeback.
For the Crusaders, it was a heavy dose of Talkington all night long, rushing for 214 yards and a score, and throwing for another score late that pushed CCC ahead. His counterpart did not disappoint either, throwing for 276 yards and three scores (Oesch- 2, D. Monroy) and rushing for another. He also carried the ball for over 110 yards on the night.
Donnie Oesch led the Quakers with six catches for 133 yards and 2 scores, while sophomore Marcus Phillips had 4-56, Dillon Monroy had 2-41, and Caden Swiger hauled in five passes for 32 yards.
With the loss, the Quakers fall to 3-1, and will finish their non-conference slate next week on the road, they take on the Padua Franciscan Bruins.

SALEM QUAKES THE POTTERS

SALEM OH- The Salem offense scored early and often, all in the 1st half Friday night, which led to a 38-6 victory in dominating fashion over Columbiana County rival East Liverpool. After scoring 40 points against Beaver Local, the Quakers picked up where they left off in week 2 and put up 38 unanswered 1st half points, en route to picking up their 3rd consecutive win to start the 2022 campaign.

Leading the way for the Quakers was Quarterback Jackson Johnson, who threw for 159 yards and four touchdown passes (Swiger, D. Monroy, Oesch-2), and ran for another. He spread the ball around to a number of different receivers on the night and they did a great job making contested catches, as well as picking up big yards after the catch.
Defensively, the Quakers ones suffocated the Potter offense, to the tune of 20 total 1st half yards and only one first down, which came with under four minutes to go until halftime.
With the 30 point separation between the two teams in the 2nd half, the 2nd string Quakers were able to see some snaps the entirety of the 3rd and 4th quarters.
Salem (3-0) will host Canton Central Catholic next week, while East Liverpool (1-2) will welcome rival Beaver Local.

SALEM FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH RON JOHNSON

SALEM OH-  I caught up with Salem Head football coach Ron Johnson before his week 3 matchup with East Liverpool. Coach Johnson touched on how happy he was with the week one grinder with Crestview, and the offensive improvements that led to the explosion in week 2 against Beaver Local. He talked about the newer guys improving and getting reps as they prepared for week 3 and beyond, and how important it is for all the guys to gain experience.

SALEM WINS ON THE ROAD

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- The Beavers and Quakers went at it on Friday night in a high scoring affair that saw the Quakers take home victory by a score of 40-27

The Quakers got the scoring started on a TD pass from QB Jackson Johnson to Ross Davidson. Salem kept their foot on the gas on both sides of the ball, forcing multiple punts and turnovers in the first half and moving the ball at will, as Jackson Johnson led the offense to two more scores before half by way of a Dominic Maniscalco TD run and a Jackson Johnson TD run. Going down 21-0 at half, the Beavers came out with a spark in the second half, with a solid kick return by Blake Lucas to set up a 37 yard TD pass from Austin Cline to Dylan Ferguson.

Salem decided to get right back at the Beavers with a long TD pass from Jackson Johnson to Donnie Oesch. A couple drives later the Beavers connected on a 14 yard TD pass, as Cline found Caleb White to cut the deficit back to 2 scores, but once again Salem answered. Dillon Monroy caught a TD pass from Johnson to stretch the lead back out to 3 scores, but the Beavers were never going down without a fight. On a roll out, Cline fired down the field for White as the two connected for the second time on the day, this time from 44 yards out. It was a 2 score game heading into the 4th, and Johnson showed the savviness of a 4 year starter, putting together a long, time consuming TD drive that he capped off with another TD run, his 5th total TD of the day, that out the lead wide enough to win the game. Beaver Local wasn’t ready to give up though, as they put together a quick score via a Cline QB sneak TD, but Salem got the ball on the kickoff and didn’t give it back before the clock reached zeros, as the Quaker offense showed up and showed out in the win.

The Quakers go back home for a matchup with East Liverpool, while the Beavers get a chance to get in the win column on their home field against Minerva.

ONE GOAL ENOUGH FOR QUAKERS

SALEM OH- After a hard fought 80 minutes of soccer, by both United and Salem, Salem comes out on top with a score of 1-0. Salems defense played very well, holding off United’s attack the whole game. Colin Reisen had 6 saves in goal. Lance Bailey scored the lone goal for Salem.

Salem moves to 1-0-0 on the season. They will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Niles.

SALEM CLIPS EAGLES WINGS

SALEM OH-  Salem Girls Soccer opened their season at Sebo Stadium with a 5-0 win over the United Eagles.  Goals by Rylee Hutton (hat trick), Abbie Davidson and Captain Mikaylynn Murphy and assists from Hutton, Davidson and CeCe Perez paced the Lady Quakers attack.  The defense played strong as a unit lead by Kaylee Carlisle in goal with their first shutout of the young season.

The Lady Quakers are back in action on Monday August 22nd when the JV take on Hubbard at 5 pm while the varsity play Springfield Local at 7 pm.

SALEM ESCAPES THE REBELS WITH LATE SCORES

SALEM OH- The Salem offense was held in check for nearly 3.5 quarters, before a field goal and a 4th quarter touchdown pass put the game out of reach; with the Quakers pulling out a tough 17-7 victory over Crestview.

Jackson Johnson connected with Caden Swiger for a 29-yard touchdown pass on a 4th down to finish off Crestview with less than 2 minutes left to go, making it 17-7.
Salem’s only other touchdown came on a 75-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Ross Davidson in the 2nd quarter.
Salem moves to 1-0 on the season and will travel to Beaver Local next week to take on the Beavers.

SALEM FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH RON JOHNSON

SALEM OH- Salem head football coach Ron Johnson enters his 11th year at the helm of the Quakers with a familiar face at quarterback, but some “new” faces in new spots. He sat down and talked about how the off-season program and start of this season has gone and how he and his staff look to reload for the 2022 campaign.
