QUAKERS SECURE A PIECE OF THE EBC

BELOIT OH-Salem looked to finish league play strong on Wednesday night as they traveled to West Branch to take on their heated rivals. The game was tight through the first three quarters with Salem holding a slim one point margin heading into the final frame, but the Quakers pulled away at the end and outscored the Warriors 15-2 in the final quarter for the victory. With a statement win over West Branch  by a score of 43-29, the Lady Quakers finish the league 9-1 and move to 17-2 on the season. The Quakers will share a first-place title finish with Marlington who beat them in the first time the two teams met.

SALEM BOTHERED, NOT BEATEN

YOUNGSTOWN OH- To say that the size that Ursuline brings to the table had no effect on Salem on Saturday would be lying.  The Irish have more size than a lot of teams that pop up on Salem’s schedule. The inside presence of Aaliyah Smith, and Trinity Lamb was a factor. The important thing however for Salem is they made sure it wasn’t a deciding factor. Did they get some shots blocked? Yes. Did they give up some points in the paint? Yes. But if you thought that was enough to break Salem’s spirit you are sorely mistaken. Salem found their ways t score, and played tremendous defense especially in the times that counted the most.  All of that led to a 44-32 win.

Abbie Davidson was right along with her average scoring 18 points on the day to lead the Quakers.  Rylee Hutton was also in double figures managing to put in 12 points.  Lauryn Barton added 6 points to the Quaker cause.

Ursuline was led by their post presence. Smith racked in double figures scoring 16 points.  Lily Scott gave the Irish a perimeter threat on her way to 10 points.

It’s officially time for Salem to focus on their biggest rival as they go to West Branch next.  Ursuline stays home on Wednesday to host East in the Steel Valley Conference show down.

QUAKERS MUSCLE THEIR WAY TO SIGNATURE WIN

ALLIANCE OH- It has been Marlington’s run of the EBC for the last couple of seasons. Their stacked roster has run their way to an undefeated conference record coming in to Wednesday night.  On Salem’s side of the battle, the last 3 meetings with Marlington did not go their way.  The Quakers have been trying to find a way past the Dukes. Wednesday night in a hostile environment they finally were able to impose their will on their conference rival.  Salem did what Salem does best, play lock down defense.  The talented Dukes team was held by far to their lowest point total of the season in Salem’s 41-35 win.

Abbie Davidson showed some tremendous toughness on the offensive side of the ball. She fought her way to a 13 point night to lead the way for Salem.  Rylee Hutton also got herself in to double figures with 10 points.  Lauryn Burton contributed 8 points to the cause.

Salem will go outside the conference on Saturday as they hit the road to play Ursuline.

MOONEY STARTING TO HEAT UP; DOWNS QUAKERS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- If you’ve been around any type of Cardinal Mooney team in the recent few years, you know this is the time the afterburners spark for the Cards.  The closer the calendar turns to the postseason, the better Mooney gets, and that was no more evident than Tuesday night in a 61-38 victory over Salem.

Ashton O’Brien led the way with 21 points for the Cardinals, as Rocco Turner and Jibri Carter went for 16, and 15 respectively.

Ross Davidson paced the Quakers with 13, while Caden Swiger had a dozen points.

Mooney extends their overall record to 9-5, while Salem falls to 6-9.

QUAKER COMEBACK; SALEM WINS OT BATTLE

SALEM, OH- In what is certain to be a contender for “Game of the Year” the Salem Quakers were able to overcome a 12-point deficit in the second half to take the game to overtime and eventually win over South Range 61-56 on Saturday night.

The Quakers trailed 24-17 at the half and outscored the Raiders in each frame the rest of the way.

Leading the way in scoring was Ross Davidson with 20 points while being supplemented by Caden Swiger’s 13 points and Cam Sampson’s 11.

South Range was paced by Ayden Leon’s tenacity in the paint resulting in 19 points, and Landon Moore’s 14 as well.

The Salem win snaps a 6-game winning streak for the Raiders and creates a 2-game streak in the right direction for the Quakers.

The Quakers (6-8) will prep for Cardinal Mooney on Tuesday on the road, while South Range will look to battle Girard.

SITTING DOWN WITH SEBO (EP 1)

SALEM, OH- One of the most influential names you’ll hear in our area no matter the conversation you’re in is Bob Sebo.

Mr. Sebo has been a Valley native going back to his childhood and being raised in Salem.  Bob was a featured member of the football, track, and basketball teams, and also lettered in the band at the time.

While his stint in sports was relatively short, his impact on area athletics has been felt seemingly forever.  Bob Sebo has had a successful career as a businessman and entrepreneur, so much so that he’s been able to give back to many causes, and sports programs around the country- and even more here in his backyard.

Bob Sebo is a man of humility who loves being able to pick up the phone and talk to coaches he’s met or even helped along the way.

For our first sit down with Bob Sebo, YSN’s DJ Yokley talks about the history, and passion that sports have provided for Bob, along with how his career in sports taught him to be in business.

WARRIORS TAKE ROUND ONE AGAINST HEATED RIVAL

They welcomed their arch rival Salem to Beloit and the Warriors walked away with a gritty 60-47 victory. Salem started off strong when they were able to jump out to a 10-1 lead. Coach Brown immediately called a timeout to calm his Warriors down. He said “ I can’t even remember what I exactly told them, but obviously it worked.” West Branch never looked back as they forced a number of turnovers and outscored the Quakers the rest of the game. Junior Guard Jaxon Robb played a big role defensively having many deflected passes in the game.

Joey Jackson had a solid night as he led the scoring with 16 points for the Warriors. Thomas Egli wasn’t far behind with 15 points and a number of rebounds. Cooper Anderson and Jeremiah Thomas each added 8 points respectively. Finally, Michael Kanagy and Jaxon Robb each chipped in scoring as well.

For Salem, Caden Swiger had a good night scoring with 16 points and Lance Bailey had 15 as he knocked down four three pointers. Salem’s turnovers hurt their attempt to come back from their deficit . West Branch forced over 20 plus turnovers with a great defensive effort.

BARWICK GIVES LEOPARDS REASON TO CELEBRATE

SALEM OH- The area was treated to a premiere matchup on Saturday afternoon. Louisville made the trip to Quaker country to take on the vaunted Quaker defense. Salem went further than any other girls team in the YSN family last season, and it’s games against teams like Louisville that got them that far.  In this edition, it was a low scoring nail biter.  Usually that would be leverage to Salem, but the Leopards were able to match the defensive intensity.

With the Leopards holding a 35-31 lead late in the game, Salem made their final push. After cutting it to 2, 35-33 the Quakers got the ball back. On a wonderfully executed play the Quakers got Lauryn Barton open for a split second. It was just long enough for her to get off a tough shot and drill it giving Salem a 36-35 lead with about 7 seconds left. It made the entire gym erupt.  Louisville went to Brooke Haren on their last possession and she drove the length of the floor, put up a tough shot and left it short.  She gave Courtney Barwick enough to time to grab a rebound and get fouled putting up a put back.   At the free throw line with .7 seconds left Barwick hit both her shots and took the 37-36 win.

Barwick and Haren both led the Leopards with 12 points a piece.  Taryn Miglich hit 2 threes on her way to 8 points for Louisville.  Abbie Davidson continued to put together great games as she scored a game-high 17 points for Salem.  Barton’s perimeter game got her to finish with 9 points while Kami Rohm finished with 6.

Louisville stays on the road on Wednesday as they travel to GlenOak.  Salem stays home on Wednesday as they return to league play against Minerva.
