SALEM GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH SARAH HAMILTON-PHILLIPS

SALEM OH- If you are shocked that we’ve come to the district championships, and we are still talking about sale, you shouldn’t be.  The Quakers are in the middle of a window of unprecedented dominance.  After getting to the regional finals last season, the Quakers are hungry to get back, and take the next step this time.  However now is no time to look ahead for Salem. Standing in front of them is Canfield, who has had a pretty solid season themselves.  Two teams ranked in the top 10 in the state RPI go at it in Streetsboro on Saturday.

Sarah Hamilton-Phillips took the time to do an interview with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig ahead of their district championship.  They break down Salem’s last win, the family atmosphere in the program, and so much more. As for the number two ranked Salem Quakers, they used a second half push as well to win by 31 points over the Howland Tigers in the district semifinal. The Tigers came out with a 2-3 zone which slowed down the Quakers offense in the early going, but Salem was able to force steals which led to transition points with a 10-7 advantage after the first quarter. The Quakers defense locked up the Tigers in the second quarter, only allowing 4 points to take a 21-11 lead at the half. Salem was shot out of a cannon in the second half showing there true self on the offensive side putting up 21 points in the fourth quarter as Salem won the ballgame 53-22 to get to the district final in back-to-back years.

The Quakers were led by Rylee Hutton who weaved to the basket all night long scoring 15 points, while Abbie Davidson was clicking on both offense and defense to score 13 points for the Quakers. Howland was led by Gia Hoso who scored 6 points on the night, while Salem did a fantastic job of limiting Howland’s best scorer Alyssa Masucci to just 3 points, all coming in the first half.

Salem is now 22-2, and will take on the Canfield Cardinals in a regular season rematch for the district title, where the Quakers beat Canfield on the road 47-33 on December 21st. Howland finished 12-13 on the campaign. The district title game will be played in Streetsboro on Saturday at 6 P.M.

ZOIE 101

SALEM OH- The last two seasons for Salem girls basketball has been some kind of ride.  Last season they made it all the way to the regional finals, just one step away from a trip to Dayton.  Now a year later even though they lost some important seniors, they might look even better.  They haven’t missed a beat, and they have their sights set on taking that next step this year.  The seniors on this roster have pushed the Quakers to continue to meet their standard.

Zoie Reid came into the year off a volleyball season where she had to be a major source of leadership. Through all the adversity that team went through, you never saw Zoie lose her attitude or energy.  She has taken that right into basketball. The biggest leadership quality that she brings to the team is that ability of hers to keep a positive mindset through adversity.  You might look at Salem’s near perfect record and think what kind of adversity could they have possibly went through? But you’ll come to learn that even in wins, there are moments of uncertainty that could tear a team down. Not while Zoie is on watch though, that energy that is such a huge part of the sport of volleyball has leaked right into the basketball team.  Zoie makes it almost impossible not believe in yourself when you’re on her team. Who wouldn’t want a teammate like that? When it comes to the intangibles that make Salem such a dominant program, Reid is the X factor.  You can’t overlook the value she brings to her teammates, and the trust they have in her on and off the floor.

Reid was able to take the time to have a conversation with YSN’s own Anthony Hartwig to talk about her senior season.  They discuss the energy she brings to her teammates, what these last two seasons on the team have been like, and so much more. SWATZILLA: QUEEN OF THE BLOCKERS

SALEM OH- Salem is riding a stretch right now in girls basketball where their defense is the definition of historic.  They have now broken the program record for points allowed per game two years in a row. When we thought last season’s defense was impressive, this year they one upped it allowing just 30.2 points per contest.  Everyone knows a truly good defense needs a good rim protector. Someone to be there when the frontline breaks to make sure that nothing gets to the hoop. For Salem they have a shot blocker whose name strikes fear in the hearts of other teams. That center of their defense is Alamo Rohm, but we have come to know her as Swatzilla.  She rampages on the floor leaving nothing but offensive destruction in her path.  She was just as good at blocking shots last season as she is this year, but this season she has added offensive power to her tool box.  Kami knew that she would have to develop an ability to score to become a well rounded player.  She did nothing but sharpen those skills as the preseason went on and the start of games got closer.  Now she’s as much of threat with the ball in her hands as she his when she’s knocking a ball out of another player’s.

Kami like her fellow seniors had to step into a big leadership role this season. When talking to her teammates it’s easy to see that her ability to keep everyone on track is a big contributor.  She is not only devoted to reaching her own goals, but has put a lot of energy into helping her team complete theirs.  She keeps everyone confident, energized and focused.  She contributes that ability to the leaders of the past who showed her the way.  The seniors from last season still have their finger prints all over this team.  Kami is proof of that.

Rohm took the time to catch up with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her senior campaign.  They talk about her development as a scorer, the ride Salem has been on the last two seasons, and much more. Check out the latest Salem Girls Basketball Player Profile only on YSN!

YOU CANT KEEP UP WITH THE FLASH

SALEM OH- Salem has shown throughout the season how much raw basketball talent they have on the floor. Whether it be on the offensive, or defensive side of the ball Salem has just been showing off this season. With that being said, it’s almost unfair that they also have one of the fastest players we see on YSN. Rylee Hutton, or as we like to call her “the Flash” has introduced the world to exactly what speed is, and what it can do.  Hutton lives up to her nickname for sure. However, what puts her on a different level than most players that are fast at this level is the fact that she has controlled speed. We see a lot of young super athletic players run out of control down the floor, and they end up making the wrong plays.  Rylee has an uncanny ability to go at a speed level of 10, and still have all the body control and decision making that she would if she slowed down.  That’s a top level athlete attribute.

Rylee has also had to step in to a much bigger leadership role this season for Salem. She isn’t the only one for sure, last season the Quakers were riddled with fantastic senior leaders.  Having them was awesome, but losing them to graduation had to make some Salem fans uneasy heading into the season.  The coaching staff was never unsure about what these next line of seniors, and Rylee as a junior would be able to do to lead this team. It was their confidence in these players that led to them being able to be confident in themselves to lead.  Salem has caught fire all year and has been one of the best teams on YSN consistently. Rylee is a big reason, her speed is a big reason, her leadership is an even bigger reason.

Rylee took the time to have a chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig about the season she’s been having. Hear the answers to some big questions like what tricks does she have for her speed? And what in the world makes Salem so great? All that and more in the latest Salem Girls Basketball Player Profile only on YSN.

CREQUE GETS HER MILESTONE, SALEM GETS THEIR WIN

AUSTINTOWN, OHIO- The Austintown Fitch Lady Falcons took on the visiting Salem Quakers on a Saturday afternoon matchup of High school Girls basketball.

The big story line for the Falcons was Zayda Creque reaching the milestone of 1,000 career points. As time was running out in the game, Creque launched a three pointer from the top of they key and it took little bounce off of the back of the rim and fell in with just a 1:19 seconds left. Kylie Folkwein led the Falcons in scoring with 14 points and Jocelyn Jourdan also added 12 points.

The Salem Quakers came out firing as Kami Rohm drilled 6 three pointers on her way to a 18 point performance. Rylee Hutton and Abbie Davison also had a productive game as Hutton finished with 16 points and Davidson dropped 17 points, as the Quakers went on the win 61-43.

The Quakers improve to a record of 18-2 and will be back in action next Saturday when they take on Notre Dame-Cathedral. The Falcons will try to finish the season at 11-11 when they take on West Branch at home on Wednesday.

Finally, Ross Davidson chipped in with 9 points, while Sampson added 5.
