RAIDERS HOIST THE COLORS AGAINST STRUTHERS

STRUTHERS, OH- Friday night was a big night for the Raider football program. With a win, they keep their playoff hopes alive, but a loss would all but end their hopes. Standing in front of them was a high powered offense in the Struthers Wildcats.

The Raiders took the opening drive down the field and looked to be in a good position to score first, but then the turn over bug struck. Isaac Allegretto dropped back and threw a pass to the sidelines and was intercepted for a pick-six. The extra point was blocked, so the Wildcats had just a 6-0 lead. But the lead would not last for long. The Raider offense would drive again all the way down the field for a touchdown. The Raiders would take the lead on the extra point, and the scoring began. The teams would exchange blows all night. The Raiders would score, then the Wildcats would score. The largest lead by any team was 8 when the Raiders took that into halftime. Struthers scored after halftime on a 69-yard run by QB, Aiden Hall.  The ‘Cats would go for 2 and get it to tie things at 35.  The Raiders would be able to get a stop on a failed fourth-down conversion by Struthers. They turned that into points and regained the lead, which they never relinquished. Both teams would score one more time but the Raiders closed things out with a 49-42 win.

The standout for the Wildcats was Big Dog of the Valley winner, Aiden Hall. He finished with 197 yards rushing and 2 TD’s on 14 carries. Hall also was 4-10 with 135 yards through the air and 2 touchdown strikes. Adding to the offense was Adrian Brown who rushed for 120 yards and 1 score. The Raiders offense was well balanced. Isaac Allegretto led the way with 216 yards passing with 2 TD’s, and 40 yards on the ground with 2 scores. Dylan Dominquez lead all Raider rushers with 139 yards and 2 scores.

The Raiders return home next week for Senior Parent night vs Hubbard Eagles. Raiders need a win to secure a place in the playoffs in Div 5. Struthers goes on the road to Poland for an important game for them as well, as both teams are jockeying for position in Div 4. Wildcats and Raiders are both sitting 7th in the computer rankings and could use a win next week to be in position to see week 11.

MOONEY FLIES HIGH, ADVANCE PAST CANTON SOUTH

Cardinal Mooney started their tournament run on the right foot with a first round sweep of Canton South (26-24 25-20 25-10).

The night began quicker than usual as technical difficulties bypassed the announcement of starting lineups. Canton South was ready to give the favored Cardinals all they could handle. The first set of the night was very competitive. Canton South held a small lead for most of the set. That was until the score reached into the twenties. It was at that point Mooney flexed their muscles and were able to come up with clutch points down the stretch. The Cardinals hit a modest .181 in the set helping them secure a 26-24 victory.

In set 2 the Cardinals would have to navigate some struggles hitting the ball. Their hitting percentage for the set dipped well into the negatives. At -.100 they weren’t going to win it with their attack. So the Cardinals made adjustments. They played solid defense and blocked extremely well in the front row. Mooney survived the tough hitting to take set two 25-20.

The Cardinals straightened everything out in set three. They had control from the very start. Rolling out to an 11-1 lead, they took away any momentum the already tired Wildcats had.  The Cardinals also had their best hitting set of the match. Only commuting two attack errors and finishing with a .269 percentage. Mooney rolled to a 25-10 match sealing set three win.

Katie Hough led the Mooney offense with 10 kills and 3 digs. Angelina Rotunno and Angela Proia split the setting duties tallying 8 assists each. CJ Sapp finished with 14 digs.

Mooney advances to play Salem on Saturday October 19th. That match will start at 6:30 at West Branch High School.

RAIDERS TAME WILDCATS

CANFIELD, OH- South Range has a tough end to last week with a three set loss to Jefferson. They bounced back with an impressive sweep of Struthers on Tuesday night (25-21 25-12 25-13)

The Raiders were shaky to begin the match, both teams were trading errors back in forth in set one. With the set tied at 12-12, the Raiders got in sync and grabbed control of the set with a 7-0 run. They took set one 25-21.

After that 7-0 rally in set one the Raiders had complete control of the match. Led by Izzy Lamparty the Raider offense was masterful in sets two and three. They were extremely efficient hitting above .200 in each, and .480 in set three. Another big key to their win was their effort on the service line. The Raiders had 7 aces on the night and plenty more serves that got the Wildcats out of system. Emily Irons led the team in aces with 3.

Izzy Lamparty had a big night with 10 kills and an ace. Anna Primavera had 7 kills and 7 digs. Emily Irons finished with 24 assists, 4 digs, 3 aces, and 3 kills. Reagan Irons led in digs with 9.
