YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney is ready for another district run. The Cardinals have been tested all season by a brutal schedule. They were tested yet again in the sectional finals by a hungry Crestview team. Pushed to the brink, the Cardinals came out on top 49-43. Now they turn their attention to Liberty in the district semifinals. The Leopards are a unique challenge but Mooney head coach Carey Palermo is confident they are ready for it.

Palermo took the time to join YSN’s Running Point to discuss the Cardinals win over Crestview. He also talked with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about the challenge ahead, and the growth the team has shown.

WEST BRANCH GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 3) WITH WALT DESHIELDS

BELOIT OH- For the sixth time in ten years West Branch girls basketball is moving on to regionals. They won the season series with Marlington with a 47-41 win. A big momentum bringing win for a Warriors team that had lost 4 of the last 5 against the Dukes coming in. Now they’ll carry their momentum into the regional semifinals on Tuesday as they matchup against Norton.

Walt DeShields stopped by Running Point this week to give us a recap of the Warriors district championship, and preview the regional matchup with Norton. GARFETTSVILLE OH- It is time for her another championship game for Garfield’s girls basketball team. It’s the third year in a row that the Lady G-Men have played for a district championship. For the third year in a row it’s the same opponent as well. Garfield Will matchup with new conference rival Champion in an all too familiar district title matchup. The two teams split their regular season meetings.

BELOIT OH- It is another year, and another district championship game for West Branch. They’ve been in so many over the years it’s almost like they have a permanent seat at the table. The Warriors used a big fourth quarter to beat Poland in the district semifinal to get to this point. It was the 8th time in 10 seasons that the two teams met at some point in the tournament. With the win West Branch eyes another familiar foe in the title game. They’ll have another chance against Marlington, a team they split with in the regular season.

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Springfield has their sights set on another district championship. This senior class has had so much success in every sport they play. It brings a huge display of leadership on to the floor for their basketball team. Springfield is taking it one step at a time, and not looking too far forward. Their next step is hosting East Palestine on Friday night in the sectional championship.

BADGER BOYS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH JOSH UPSHIRE

KINGSMAN OH- Badger brings a ton of size with them to this division 4 district tournament. That is a big advantage they have over other teams, and head coach Josh Upshire knows it. Now, Jackson Milton knows it as well. The height of the Braves caused too many problems for the Blue Jays to overcome in the sectional semifinal. Badger moves on to travel to Lisbon in the sectional final on Friday, and they hope their size will be just as dominating.

URSULINE GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH BERNARD SCOTT

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline has been a growing team all season long. The progress they made throughout the year could easily be seen. Under first year head coach Bernard Scott, the Irish are now starting to gel into his philosophy and culture. That was evident in the Irish’s sectional final win on the road against United. Ursuline lost to the Eagles in overtime during the regular season, but came back strong to beat them out of the tournament.

Coach Scott took the time to join YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about his team and the growth he’s seen this season. STRUTHERS OH- The Struthers Wildcats are, once again, ready to make an exciting tournament run. Much like the high-flying Struthers team of last season.

The difference this year? The Struthers community packed The Fieldhouse for home games once again, providing a 6th man feel for The Wildcats all season. 

Winning a share of The NE8 Championship once again this season, Struthers is carrying all the momentum into a tournament game against Notre Dame Cathedral Latin.

LOWELLVILLE GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH LISA MODELSKI

LOWELLVILLE OH- Lowellville has turned into upset city! The Rockets have officially started to make some noise in the Division IV district. On Saturday they went on the road to the eighth seeded Badger Braves. The Rockets stormed to a 60-55 win in double overtime. The excitement of the win went further than just the team. The entire student section rushed the floor as the energy bubbles up.

Now the next test awaits as the Rockets go on to play the top seeded Panthers from Bristol. Lowellville how’s the mountain is high to climb, but they have the confidence to climb it. It’s time for the Rockets to rumble the afterburners in the district tournament.
