A RAY OF SUNSHINE

AUSTINTOWN OH- Austintown Fitch softball has been on a tear this season. They haven’t lost to anyone in the state of Ohio.  They are one win away from a trip to Akron and the state tournament.  Their lineup is stacked 1-9, but always setting the tone at the top is Ayla Ray.

Ayla might be one of the most feared leadoff hitters in the YSN family. The versatile nature of her bat must make her a nightmare to game plan against. She has only struck out 3 times this season. You can attribute that to her two strike approach.  She has a expert level eye at the plate, and never tries to do too much with two strikes.  Her spray chart will show you that Ray has the ability to hit the ball line to line. That makes her lethal. And because coach award puts her at the top of the order, walking her to lead things off would put a team behind the preverbal eight ball.

As far as her numbers go, Ayla is currently hitting .583 on the season.  She leads the team in hits with 49.  She has hit 2 home runs, 10 doubles, and knocked in 18 RBI.  Ray also carries a slugging percentage of .892.  As far as her glove goes, Ray holds down the middle of the infield at shortstop.  She has a fielding percentage of .938. She’s only made 2 errors all season with 32 total chances.

SPARTANS BLANK FITCH ON THE ROAD

AUSTINTOWN OH-  Boardman defeated Austintown-Fitch 5-0 on Thursday as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. The win gives Boardman the season series over Fitch, and the sectional championship.

Boardman opened up scoring in the second inning. An error scored two runs.

One bright spot for Fitch was a single by Dom Perry in the third inning.

Griffin Widrig was the winning pitcher for Boardman. The righty allowed five hits and zero runs over six innings, striking out 12 and walking one. Young threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Young recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

Joe Roth took the loss for the Falcons. The bulldog lasted seven innings, allowing nine hits and five runs while striking out eight.

The Spartans had nine hits in the game. Colin Thomas and Widrig each managed multiple hits. Thomas led with three hits in four at bats. Boardman  didn’t commit a single error in the field. Seth Cervello had 13 chances in the field, the most on the team.

Fitch tallied six hits on the day. Carter Owens and Perry each racked up multiple hits for Fitch.

Boardman advances to the district semifinals to play Uniontown Lake.  That game is set for Tuesday at 5:00 at Thurman Munson Memorial Field in Canton.

A CROWN FIT FOR A FALCON; FITCH TAKES THE DISTRICT IN WALK OFF FASHION

AUSTINTOWN OH- District Championships aren’t supposed to be easy. Austintown Fitch learned that lesson all too well on Wednesday night as they hosted Green in the Division 1 Austintown District Championship. For the first 5 innings, Fitch’s defense was able to hold Green in check. However, a five run sixth put the Falcons in a corner. They responded with a run in the bottom, and then a walk off fielder’s choice with the bases loaded to win their first championship since 2013.

Maddy Taylor got the offense started for Fitch in the first inning. After Ayla Ray got on base to start the inning, Maddy Taylor would come up with a RBI double to score her. The score would remain 1-0 until the 4th inning when Sammi Aey smacked a double to right center to make it 2-0.  In the 5th, Fitch added two more with a pair of bases loaded walks. It was 4-0 Falcons going into the 6th.

The sixth inning belonged to the Bulldogs. They quickly grabbed momentum by stringing together a few clutch hits, and adding on a couple drawn walks as well. They had doubled from Carlie Chapman, and Madison Pukansky. Green scored 5 runs in the 6th to take their first lead of the day.

The Falcons quickly responded with a run back in the bottom of the frame to knot the game up. Sydnie Watts then buckled down with a shutout 7th to give Fitch a golden opportunity to win.

The Falcons would load the bases with no outs. Alli Foley stepped to the plate and put the ball in play. It was credited as a fielder’s choice, and that was good enough for a walk off win.

Taylor, and Ray each had multiple hits for the Falcons at the plate. Samantha Severn was on base three times for Fitch on the night drawing three walks, that includes the one that would eventually be the game winning run.   Watts struck out 18 in the 7 innings pitched she put in. She gave up 5 runs on 4 hits, and 4 walks.

Fitch advances to the regional final on Wednesday where they’ll match up against Brecksville. Brecksville won their district championship over Berkshire 10-0.  That game is slated for 5:00 at YSU softball complex.

FITCH RETURNS TO THE DISTRICT FINAL

AUSTINTOWN OH- The Lady Falcon softball team blanked Louisville 6-0 on Monday afternoon in the first game of the District Semifinals.  With the victory, the team improves their record to 21-2 and they advance to face Green on Wednesday, an 11-0 winner over Perry in the other semifinal game.

Fresh off being named the AAC conference player of the year, Freshmen Sydnie Watts, pitched a complete-game shutout to help the Falcons advance to the District Championship.  Watts struck out 17 and didn’t walk a batter in her 7 innings of work.

Watts also helped at the plate with a solo home run and a single on the day.  Senior Maddy Taylor plated 3 runs to go along with three hits on the day, a single, double and a home run.  Senior Alison Foley smacked an RBI double and fellow senior Samantha Aey added a triple.  Junior Caitlin Mitchell had a RBI on a Sacrifice Fly to help the offense.

The first pitch for Wednesday’s District Championship game will be at 5:00 PM at Fitch.

THERE’S NO FOOLING WITH FOLEY

AUSTINTOWN OH- Next level talent isn’t as common as the area of northeast Ohio makes it look. Although Fitch seems to have figured something out. They have next level talent at every turn. Ali Foley is one who sets, keeps, and passes on the Falcons standard.

No one works harder at their craft than Foley.  When you want to talk about leading by example, you can’t have that conversation without her. Foley gives every ounce of energy to the Falcons program. She does it whether or not she’s on the field at the time. She has been picked by many of her teammates as the loudest player in the dugout.  Nothing gets left on the field. When you play that way, you can go home knowing that there was nothing left on the table.  Foley’s presence in the locker room gives the younger players on the team an insight into how to be successful.

Foley has made the decision to continue her softball career at Hocking Community College. She adds to the list of Falcons players that are going to play at the next level.

A GRADE AEY PLAYER

AUSTINTOWN OH- Fitch’s Samantha Aey is finding out what it’s like to a part of a program with a tremendous standard for success.  She has always been a fantastic player. Now in Austintown the bar is being raised and her talent is shining through.

When the bar is raised, the best raise with it. Samantha has absolutely been able raise her level of play and become an excellent piece to a successful program. The experiences she brings to the game is unmeasurable. Yes, the numbers are there, but it goes way past numbers. Energy, attitude, work ethic, those are the attributes of someone who will leave a legacy on a team.  The test has been turned in, and Samantha gets the A.

Samantha will also continue to get good grades in college as she has decided to play softball at Baldwin Wallace University to keep her athletic career going after high school.

HOWLAND’S WIN GIVES BOARDMAN OUTRIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Howland Tigers had no trouble on offense today, winning big over Austintown-Fitch 9-2. The win gives Boardman the outright AAC championship.

Howland got things moving in the first inning. Jak Kenney doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs.

Howland tallied four runs in the seventh inning. Luca Massucci, Robert Gumino, Ryan Hooper, and Brenden Ray all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Ray was credited with the victory for the Tigers. The southpaw lasted seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out four.

Frank Pugliese took the loss for Austintown-Fitch. He lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out three.

Carter Owens started the game for Austintown-Fitch. The hurler went one and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out two

Howland totaled 15 hits. Anthony Massucci, Marco Massucci, Ray, Braden Gebhardt, and Hooper each had multiple hits. Ray, Massucci, and Massucci each collected three hits to lead.

Austintown-Fitch collected six hits on the day. Drew Kaschak and Josh Loew each collected multiple hits.

BOARDMAN CLINCHES SHARE OF AAC TITLE

BOARDMAN, OH- To count the Spartans out of the AAC Baseball Championship chase would have been a mistake.  An oversight for many around the area gave just enough bulletin board material to the Spartans to shock the world.

Griffin Widrig had all the right stuff on Wednesday for the Spartans, allowing zero runs and besting Austintown-Fitch by a score of 1-0

The pitching was strong on both sides. Widrig struck out seven, while Jack Knight sat down five.

A single by Carter Owens in the fourth inning was big for Austintown-Fitch, getting their first hit of the contest.

Widrig was on the hill for Boardman for the entirety. The right-hander surrendered zero runs on four hits over seven innings, striking out seven and walking zero.

Jack Knight was on the mound for Austintown-Fitch. The hurler went an impressive six innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five.

Stephen Conti went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Boardman offensively.  Seth Cervello was 1-1 with a walk.  Caleb Satterfield was one of three but scored the only run of the ball game.

Fitch’s four singles came from Carson Fuller, Dom Perry, Branden Stephenson, and Owens.

Boardman (12-11-1) now look to put a bow on the regular season against Poland at home on Thursday, while Fitch (17-5) will take on Howland Thursday, and South Range Friday at the Nest.

WATTS OPENS TOURNAMENT WITH PERFECT GAME; FITCH ADVANCES

AUSTINTOWN OH- Austintown Fitch defeated Kent Roosevelt 10-0 on Wednesday to claim the Sectional Championship.  The victory, the team’s 20th of the season, moves them into the District Semifinals against Lousiville on Monday, May 16 at Fitch with first pitch scheduled at 3:30 PM.

Freshmen Sydnie Watts earned the victory in the circle, pitching a perfect game, allowing no Kent Roosevelt batter to reach base.  She struck out 11 in 5 innings as the game was shortened due to the run-rule.

Offensively, Watts drove in 3 runs in the game on a sacrifice fly, single and home run. Sophomore Ayla Ray also had a sacrifice fly to drive in a run.  Senior Maddy Taylor collected her 100th and 101st career hits during the game.

The other District Semifinal game will feature Massillon Perry and Green at 5:30 PM on Monday at Fitch.
