MCDONALD SURVIVES A SCARE TO MOVE ON

By Michael Wolfgang

McDONALD, OHIO – The offense for McDonald wasn’t as high scoring Wednesday night against Cardinal as it has been several times this season, but two runs along with a combined shutout out from their pitchers was enough to get the win and advance 2-0.

A single by Alivia Morrison got the Blue Devils on the board in the first inning. Cardinal kept McDonald at bay offensively for four innings until the Blue Devils added their second run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 2-0.

Bella O’Brien got the job done on offense as she went two-for-three. O’Brien was also a force in the pitchers circle, being part of that combined shout where she pitched five innings of zero hits, two walks, and a dazzling 14 strikeouts. Gianna Mancini started the game as she pitched the first two innings striking out four and only allowing one hit, the lone hit of the game for Cardinal which was a single by Morgan Soltis.

The final line for McDonald was two runs on five hits with one fielding error. Next up for McDonald is Western Reserve at home at 5:00 p.m. Thursday night.

THE HEATH BLIZZARD KEEPS OPPONENTS COLD

BERLIN CENTER OH- Western Reserve is known for their offense this year that is for sure. The Blue Devils average over 14 runs per game, and have plenty of hitters hitting over .400. However, don’t make that trick you into thinking they don’t have a lockdown pitcher in the circle. Western Reserve has been able to run rule a ton of opponents because their offense would blast their way to a high score, while Hannah Heath would keep the opposing offense down.  Heath has been an awesome senior leader for Western Reserve setting the tone in the circle.  She has been an incredible role model for the younger players on the team, and while she is making a huge impact this season, she is also going to have an impact on this program for years to come.  Her competitive nature elevates the standard of everyone around her.  It’s a big reason why Western Reserve earned a one seed in the district tournament.

Heath this season has been dynamite in the circle. In 54.0 IP she has collected an ERA of 2.30.  She has struck out 43 hitters.  One of the most impressive numbers in her pitching staff is 62 runners left on base. It shows that Heath is very good at getting out of jams with runners on base.  Heath also leads the offense with a .679. She has knocked in 25 RBI and scored 38 runs.  She has only struck out 4 times all season.

Heath took the time to chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig about her senior season. They talk about going on to the next level to play in Hiram, how she wants to cap off her senior season, and so much more. Check out the latest Western Reserve Softball Player Profile exclusively on YSN!

MCCOMBS MAKING MOVES

MCDONALD OH- It has been a wild journey for Bri McCombs of McDonald. Not many pitchers in their high school career get to say they experienced all of the following during their high school career. Learning from a future college pitcher, carrying a huge load of innings for their team, and being a part of a one two punch. That is exactly how McCombs can describe her career so far as a Blue Devil. She spent time under Bri Callow who was one of the most dominant pitchers in the entire area while she was at McDonald, last year Bri led the Devils in innings pitched by far, and now this year with the addition of Bella O’Brien to the roster, Bri is able to be a part of a versatile pitching staff that can hit you from multiple angles.

Although her role has changed multiple times throughout the years, one thing has never changed. That is Bri’s commitment and work ethic to be great. She is never satisfied with where she is at and always raising the bar to get better. That’s how she managed to step into the ace mentality that McDonald needed last season, and find a ton of success doing it.

In 21.0 IP this season McCombs has worked an ERA of 0.33.  She has only given up 1 earned run so far this spring, while striking out 42, and only walking 5.  At the plate McCombs is hitting .258 with 9 RBI.  She has drawn 11 walks which cranks her on base percentage up to .452.

McCombs took the time to join YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her career so far at McDonald. They also discuss the different roles she’s had on the team, how she keeps that ace mentality, and much more. Check out the latest McDonald Softball Player Profile only on YSN!
