GARFIELD SURVIVES MIGHTY CHAMPION EFFORT

GARRETTSVILLE OH- You can never count out a Champion team, that is a lesson Garfield learned all too well on Thursday night. To say the start of the season has been bumpy for Champion would be an understatement. Plagued with injuries the Flashes have had to put players in to new situations with little to no experience.  They’ve taken their lumps, but a win on Thursday against an undefeated Garfield team could have sparked a huge turnaround. They got close. In the end it was the G-Men that showed grit and battled through Champion’s biggest punch to keep their perfect season alive 46-43.

Mandy Cardinal led the way for Garfiekd has she put in a big 16 points. Madeline Shirkey also got in to double figures on the night finishing with 13.  Laura McCoy finished with 5 points.

For Champion their efforts were led by Bella Meyer with a game-high 22 points. Kayla Haynie added one of the best games of her season getting in to double figures with 15 points.

Garfield escapes with the victory and moves on to travel to Liberty on Monday. Champion will stay on the road as they travel to Campbell.

RILEY GIVES CHAMPION SWIMMING A HEARTBEAT

WARREN OH- If you ask Champion senior Riley Robinette what she wants to do with her future, her vision is very clear. She wants to be a heart surgeon, and she has already but plenty of things in motion to accomplish those goals. It’s no coincidence that the girl that wants to help give people a better heartbeat, is a big reason Champion swimming has a heartbeat. It was her dedication to the sport, and desire to represent the purple and gold that drove the school to make a team. Last season, Riley was quite literally a one woman show. She was the only Champion swimmer, but she embraced the experience and proudly wore her school colors.  Seeing her success and passion has brought three new swimmers to the squad this season, meaning the Flashes have enough to put together a relay.  Riley continues to strive to build up the Champion program so more swimmers have the opportunity to do what she is doing now.

Riley is no slouch in the pool. She came to our attention by winning a MVAC athlete of the week award in the first week of the season. She broke personal records in both the 50m freestyle, and 100m freestyle.  Beating her personal best was one of the goals she set coming in, and it didn’t take her long to reach that. Now Riley sets new goals as she ventures on into her senior season.

Riley took the time to chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about her senior year, and the growth of this program. They also talk about what drove her into the pool, how special the opportunity is to represent her school, and much more. Check out the latest Champion Swimming Player Profile only on YSN.

The Flashes came storming back to start the second half led by Isabella Meyer and Abigail Meadors who both had 11 points. The Flashes got within 5 points before the Rebels put an ultimate hold on their comeback.

The Rebels were guided by Addison Rhodes who put up 21 points, Luvrain Gaskins with 6 points, and as well as Lexi Blower with 10 points. The Rebels poured it on with 28 points in the 4th quarter and went on to win 61-35.

BULLDOGS DON’T LET UP

POLAND OH- Poland knew coming in to the game that their opponent in Champion didn’t have their full roster. The Flashes came in missing several varsity starters due to injury.  Maybe that was why Poland came out just a tick slow to start the game, but like most Poland wins in the past 5 seasons the story was their defense that held the door shut while their offense found a groove. Scoring would eventually begin rolling for the Bulldogs and they’d go on to a 51-22 win over Champion..

For the second straight night Mary Brant led Poland with 17 points.  Sarah Forsyth consistently attacked the Flashes zone on her way to 12 points. Katie McDonald was also in double figures with 10 points.

Bella Meyer did everything she could to try and keep Champion in the game. She scored 13 points to lead the Flashes. Kyla Haynie chipped in a solid final frame to finish with 5 points, all of those coming in the fourth.

Poland will have their first road test on Monday as they’ll travel to Boardman.  Champion will look ahead to a game on the road in Warren JFK on Monday.

WELCOME TO VESEY VISION

WARREN OH- Great players will always find ways to ask themselves “what else can I do to help my team win?” For Champion’s Nick Vesey , he’s been asking, and answering that question his whole career.  He’s been put in a bunch of different spots and taken more and more responsibility to help his team win. It’s what makes him so valuable to the Champion family. This season after a tough start to the season, Coach Conrad says Vesey  was one of the players that came to him and asked what more he could do for his teammates. So now in a new more producing spot, Vesey has started to shine bright for the Flashes.

To this point, Vesey leads the program in rushing yards gaining 649 yards on 81 carries. In case you don’t want to do the math, that’s an average of over 8 yards per carry.  He is also a great target for Joey Fell. Vesey has caught 11 balls for 209 yards. That’s 19 yards per catch.

Vesey took the time to hop on to YSN’s Running Point to unpack his senior season with us. He talks to Ty Bartell and Anthony Hartwig about Tagus versatility as a player, what some of his personal goals were this season, and much more. CHAMPION FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH THOMAS CONRAD

WARREN OH- In the very competitive Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference’s (MVAC) Gray Tier, The Champion Flashes look to take the next step. The Flashes dropped their first two non-conference games of the season to 5-0 Warren JFK and 4-1 Rootstown before winning three straight games, including two conference matchups to exceed their win total from a season ago.

A breakout game against a very good Ravenna Southeast team, followed by a gritty and gutsy close conference victory against Newton Falls. Joey Fell and Nick Vesey have been the engines that make the offense go, and they went full steam against LaBrae to set Champion up with a 3-2 record at the midway mark of the season.

The Flashes feature matchups with Brookfield, Crestview and Garfield in the second half of the season, with their Week 6 matchup slated to host The 4-1 G-Men of Garrettsville. Champion Head Coach Tom Conrad got the chance to stop by Running Point and discuss with Anthony and Ty about the season so far and the goals going forward for The Flashes.
