TOY BREAKS STOLEN BASE RECORD IN SALEM WIN

MINERVA OH- In the bottom of the 6th inning with one out Channing Toy was hit by a pitch. She stole second & then Lauryn Barton laid down a sac bunt & darn near beat it out. Chase Toy delivered an rbi single plating her sister from third for a key insurance run. Chase stole second on the first pitch giving her 26 on the season. Two pitches later she swiped third base breaking the single season stolen base record held by Reagan Meals. Chase has now stolen 27 bases this season. Congrats to the stolen base Queen – you are one heck of an athlete!

Despite 5 Salem hits in the game they were still able to steal 9 bases in 9 attempts. Each of Salem’s four runs they scored, stole a base on their eventual way to the plate. In contrast the Lions didn’t steal any bases & were caught stealing in both attempts. Other thief’s included Lauryn Barton (2), Mack Zumbar (2), Channing Toy & Emilee Lewis.

Lauryn Barton had a bunt single & scored two of the 4 Salem runs. Such impressive hustle when with two outs Mack Zumbar blooped a single over the 1st baseman’s head & Lauryn took off from second  without hesitation & scored. Mack also doubled in the game with 2 RBI. Chase Toy had two hits & walked. Mack Zumbar & Chase Toy extended their hitting streaks to 10 games. Sophie Maniscalco had an RBI. Kaylee Johnson had a sac bunt as Bella Brant reached base twice including getting hit by a pitch, a stat she leads in annually. Sareny Wang scored a run as a pinch runner.

Morgane Blaine pitched a complete game to pickup the win. She struck out six while walking just two on 99 total pitches. She carried a shutout into the 7th when the Lions attempted to rally before Ice Ice Blainey shut the door making all three outs. She struck out two in the inning & tagged out a runner caught in a “pickle” trying to steal.

Catcher Channing Toy was on point throwing out two runners trying to steal thwarting any comeback. Morgane Blaine assisted in 5 outs defensively including a double play on a line drive back to her in the circle. Mack Zumbar made an amazing diving catch on a line drive towards the 3-4 hole in the 5th inning.

Tomorrow is senior night vs Beaver Local at Southeast.

WATTS IS PITCH PERFECT AGAINST CONFERENCE RIVAL

By Ty Bartell

Since returning from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina The Austintown Fitch Falcons Softball club has continued a string of dominance against some of the region’s toughest competitors. With wins against The Painesville-Riverside Beavers and Chardon Hilltoppers since their return to add to their already impressive resume. After play was suspended for The Falcons in their previous game against The Archbishop Hoban Knights, Austintown was looking to get a complete game in. Monday’s opponent would be a much improved Warren G. Harding Raiders squad from years previous, as The Raiders compiled a 7-8 record before making the trip To The Austintown Fitch Falcons Softball Complex.

Sydnie Watts started the game in the circle, and like 80+ times in her career, struck out the side in order to send it to the bottom of the first. Fitch would waste little time scoring, Ayla Ray got hit by a pitch and used her speed and infield mistakes to wind up on third. Watts would eventually bring her home for her 15th RBI of the season! The Falcons were not done there, McKenna Hogan would plate a run before Abby Toth capped-off the first inning with a three run blast to left, her fifth of the season, marking a five run opening inning for Fitch and allowing Toth to celebrate “Abby Day” which happens to be everyday in Austintown.

Back in the circle and Sydnie Watts continued her string of dominance, striking out the side an additional three times in a row! Which, if you are counting, is 12 straight sent down by way of the K. Fitch provided all the offense needed in the first, but jumped all over the scoreboard with a ten run second inning to create major distance between The Falcons and their All-American Conference (AAC) foe. 14 hits were spread out amongst nine different Falcons in this game, as Fitch added three more additional runs in the third.

However, the story of the game stayed in and near the circle. The “Untouchable” Sydnie Watts was just that! Pitching a Perfect Game for the third time in her career and the second time this season! Watts also struck out an unbelievable 14 out of 15 batters in the game as Austintown won their 13th straight win on the season! More importantly to The Falcons, their AAC record also stays perfect at a 5-0 clip with both The Raiders and The Falcons running it back, this time in Warren, on Tuesday, April 25th for a 5 p.m. first pitch!

Plenty of Ghost Energy® will go around following this win, although ghosts may not have been the scariest thing The Raiders had seen on Monday. Interviews with The Perfect Game battery of Sydnie Watts and McKenna Hogan as well as Abby Toth can be found below!

G-MEN PUT DOWN THE REBELS

By Michael Wolfgang

GARRETTSVILLE, OHIO – A good old fashioned, hard fought, Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference matchup was what Garfield and Crestview provided Monday with the G-Men coming out on top 7-2.

After taking a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning, Garfield wouldn’t surrender the lead and made sure to add on for some insurance in the fourth and fifth innings. Kyndall Hahn was locked in at the dish going 3-for-4 with one RBI, one run, and showed off the speed on the basepaths stealing two bases. Liszt Moore had a stellar start in the pitcher’s circle for Garfield.

Moore had all of her stuff working against the Rebels batters, finishing with a line of two runs on seven hits, one earned run allowed, and striking out four batters over the seven inning, complete game start. Three fielding errors by Garfield gave Crestview life but they were unable to capitalize on those mistakes by the G-Men.

Tuesday night at 5:00 p.m. in Columbiana will be the site as these two teams link up again with Garfield looking to grab another win and Crestview looking to even up the season series.
