LEOPARDS UPSET SALEM TO MOVE ON

SALEM OH- Louisville may have come in the underdog in Tuesday night’s matchup with 12th seeded Salem, but that didn’t bother them at all. The Leopards defense stalled the Quakers for a 2-0 shutout. They advance to the sectional finals.

Sophomore Drew Dillen knocked one in early in the first half to take a 1-0 lead. The assist went to Angelo Paquelet. That was all the scoring for the first half, but in the second the Leopards would add to their lead with a goal from freshman Dominic Porter-Kovecich. Joe Reynolds earned his sixth shutout of the season securing one save in front of the net.

Louisville will hit the road again as they advance to travel to sixth seeded Mentor Lake Catholic on Saturday. That game is slated to kick off at 4:00.

CARROLLTON HAUNTS QUAKERS DREAMS

CARROLTON OH- The Salem Quakers still had high hopes of competing for a EBC championship on Friday as they faced Carrolton. But the Warriors turned those dreams into nightmares as they came out of a thriller to beat the Quakers 28-26.

Jackson Johnson went 19/29 in the passing game with 235 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a pair of scores. He threw his touchdown in the last drive in the game in an amazing find on 4th and long. The game tying two point conversion came just short. Austin Sinkovich caught 3 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Blaize Exline caught 10 passes for 66 yards.

Salem will need to bounce back in Week 9 as they return home to host Canton South.

SALEM RESPONDS WITH SHUTOUT OF REBELS

SALEM OH- On Monday, Salem suffered their first loss of the season against Howland. Their schedule didn’t get any easier, as a dangerous Crestview offense came to them on Wednesday. They were no match for Salem’s defense though, and the Quakers got back in the win column with the 4-0 win.

Rylee Hutton set the tone from the start. She scored a hat trick before the match even reached halftime. Mikaylnn Murphy also contributed a goal to the cause. Abby Perry collected a pair of assists.

Salem has a big matchup with West Branch on Wednesday.

SALEM OVERCOMES SLOW START IN MARLINGTON

MARLINGTON OH- After a slow start by the high powered Quaker offense, they were able to find traction on the ground to the tune of 260 yards and knock of Marlington 35-17. After recent weeks where the aerial assault was in full force, it was the run game that dominated the night for the Quaker offense.

Jackson Johnson led the way with over 100 yards on the ground of his own, but was not alone, as Blaize Exline and Jason Austin carried the load for 80 and 89 yards respectively.

Salem was also aided by their defense, who surrendered only 3 points through the first 3 quarters, before Marlington was able to put two late touchdowns on the board. The Quakers also forced three turnovers on the evening, all interceptions, by Cam Jaquette, Donnie Oesch, and Damon Wolfe.

Wolfe’s interception couldn’t have come at a better time for the Quakers, who saw the Dukes driving and looking to cut into the Quaker lead. Deep in Quaker territory, Marlington tried to run a pitch to the left, which ended up in the hands of Wolfe, who would rumble 93 yards for the score, and put the game on ice.

Salem (6-1) now heads into the meat of the schedule with games next week at Carrollton, Canton South, before finishing off the regular season at home against West Branch. Combined, those teams are 17-4.

SALEM TAKES OUT FRUSTRATION ON LIONS

SALEM OH- The Salem Quakers bounced back from their first loss of the season in a big way Friday night with a 66-0 victory over Minerva on Homecoming at Sebo Stadium Friday Night.

After a 27-21 OT loss at Alliance in week 5, which saw the Quakers turn the ball over 3 times, and struggle to finish drives, Salem scored early and often to the tune of 42 first quarter points.

Offensively the Quakers were led by Jackson Johnson, who threw for a school record 7 touchdowns on the night: 3 to Senior Blaize Exline, 3 to Caden Swiger, and one to Austin Sinkovich. Johnson would also punch in two scores on the ground.

Not to be outdone, the defense pitched their second shutout of the year (Akron Firestone in week 4). They forced the Lions into 7 turnovers (four INTs, 3 fumbles) which gave the a Quakers short field and they were able to take advantage. Ross Davidson was the star on defense and led the charge with three interceptions and a fumble recovery. Senior Cam Jaquette had the other interception.

The Quakers (5-1, 1-1) continue EBC play as they travel to Marlington next week to take on the Dukes. Kickoff is set for 7:00.

BLAZING PAST YOU

SALEM OH- Salem’s offense has been one of the most explosive units we have seen in the 2021 season. Big play after big play has Salem off to an impressive 4-1 start to the campaign. A majority of those big plays are coming off the feet of senior wide receiver Blaize Exline.

Some call Blaize the “x factor” of Salem’s offense, and they might be right. The Quakers seem to find success if they can get Exline the ball in space. His elite speed, and ability to read the field in front of him make him one of the most dangerous players in the YSN family. But if you ask him, he says the most improved part of his game is his route running. A dive into film will quickly show just how right he is. Blaize is able to run pristine routes that give opposing secondaries a lot of problems. Another big attribute to Exline’s game is his ability to make cuts on a dime. It really makes him hard to read. He’d call it a sense of the unexpected.

Blaize was kind enough to drop in to Running Point this week to talk about his season, and winning Baird Brothers Big Dog of the Valley this week. He also talks with Anthony Hartwig and Ty Bartell about his coaching staff, how he gets ready for Friday nights, and much more. Check out the latest Salem Football Player Profile “Blazing Past You.”
