DOWNTOWN ABBIE

SALEM OH- Salem is on the path to regionals! For the first time since 2004 the Quakers have won a district championship and will travel to Barberton for regionals. One of the biggest reasons that Salem has been able to persevere through a long basketball season is emotional is their emotional, and mental leader Abbie Davidson. She’s not a senior, but she’s been asked to act as one of the teams strongest pillars of leadership.

Abbie has been dealing with a knee injury all season long. Suffered in soccer, she has worked her way all the way back. Like most injuries, the biggest obstacle for Abbie was the mental toughness. Being able to trust her knee and trust that it’s okay. However, watching her go through this journey of getting through knee pain, and wearing a brace has done nothing but strengthen the respect her teammates have for her. She had been a shining model of the right way to deal with adversity. Everyone on Salem’s roster, and everyone close to the program has been shown a strong lesson by Abbie Davidson.

Abbie took the time to join YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her basketball season. She chats with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about her journey through adversity, her excitement for the regional games, and much more. Before you head to Barberton, check out the latest Salem player profile.

SALEM’S BECK SIGNS WITH NOTRE DAME

SALEM, OH- Congratulations to Salem Backstop Darius Beck on his decision to continue his academic and athletic careers at Notre Dame College on the men’s baseball team.

Beck, a senior, is a member of the baseball team at Salem High School who served as one of the leaders on the diamond in 2021.  Beck helped the Quakers to a 16-5 regular-season mark and made it all the way to the regional final.

Beck batted .390 with a .445 OBP with two home runs, and 20 RBI and threw out 8 from behind the dish.

We wish Darius the best of luck as he competes at Notre Dame College.

QUAKERS STAND TALL ON HOMECOMING

SALEM, OH- Don’t look now, but the Salem Quakers are figuring things out.  The Quakers are on a 3-game run against some tough opponents, and the team chemistry has never been better.  Leading the way in the lab is the Mad Scientist, Jeff Andres, who has taken risks in the second half of the season to garner big rewards.  None bigger than the 56-39 victory over their top rival, West Branch on Friday night.

The Quakers looked to be on a mission on the night of homecoming in front of a capacity crowd in “The Cab.”  Sophomore Cam Sampson showed his keen sharpshooting abilities as he knocked down shot after shot on his way to 14.  While Senior Captain Brock Young was a floor general and a true leader keeping the team focused and engaged.  Young’s leadership showed in key situations as things started to get chippy on the floor, and Young would communicate between officials and teammates to ice down the situation.  Brock also was vital in the scorebook with a dozen points, and was the maestro on a spectacular alley-oop pass to Drew Weir to blow the lid off the gymnasium late in the game.

West Branch, who came in fourth on the YSN Power Rankings in Week 8, were led by Dru DeShields’ 14 points which were well-earned in this physical matchup.  Nick Wilson also contributed 11 for the Warriors (11-3)

Salem (6-11)will ice their new bruises following the victory, and will now rest for a week as they’ll host Carrollton on Friday, February 4th at John A. Cabas Gymnasium.

MOONEY FINISHES OFF HUGE UPSET

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Not many people would have given Mooney much of a chance on Saturday against Salem. After all this Cardinal team got beat up by West Branch just last week. However, the Cardinals canceled out the noise. On the day that the district seeds came out, they knew they could send a statement to everyone in Division 2 if they would be able to beat Salem.

Mooney set the tone early jumping out to an 11-3 lead. Salem only had one bucket from the field during that stretch, and their shooting woes continued all night. Mooney’s offense didn’t light the world on fire, but they did just enough to back up their inspired defense to win 38-36.

Alaina Scavina led the Cardinals with 12 points. All of her points came in the first half. In the second half with the Quakers locking down Scavina, Sophia Diorio stepped up scoring most of her 11 points in the final two frames. Maria Fire played smart in foul trouble and scored an important 7 points. Angelina Rotunno hit huge free throws down the stretch as well.

Salem never stopped battling back. They really started to find a rhythm in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late. They were led by Abbie Davidson scoring 12 points. Krista Barley, and Abby Perry both finished with 6 points. All of Barley’s points came from behind the arc.

Next up for Mooney will be a hike matchup with Southeast on Monday night. Salem will try to shake this off and bounce back Saturday hosting Carrollton.

QUAKERS STUN MARLINGTON

SALEM, OH- Down by as many as thirteen in the first half, the Salem Quakers found a way to punch their way back into the game en route to a 53-51 victory over EBC-Leading Marlington on Tuesday night.

Salem was flat to start the game, in fact in the first quarter, all Salem could muster up was two points.

Halftime sparked the Red and Black attack, as they outscored the Dukes by 15 in the second half by moving the ball inside, and pounding the rock to open up the perimeter later in the contest.  The Quakers were paced by Drew Weir’s game-high 17 points.  Ross Davidson showed fire from the bench with 13 points, and sharpshooter, Cam Sampson netted 10.

For Marlington, Tommy Skelding battled for 13 points, and Connor Evanich had 12.

The Quakers (5-11) will turn their attention to West Branch at the Cab on Friday Night.

QUAKERS DROP A TOUGH ONE TO ALLIANCE

SALEM, OH – Salem and Alliance squared off in an Eastern Buckeye Conference matchup Tuesday night and it was a good one! The Quakers were determined to get their season back on track as they started out strong and either led or were tied with the Aviators for the majority of the game. The pace picked up in the fourth as Alliance was crawling back in, the Aviators eventually took the lead with two minutes to go in the game. That is when Salem’s Drew Weir would tie the game up at 52 with just seconds to go. But, Gage Ford and Alliance had other plans as Ford managed to knock down a mid range dagger shot at the buzzer to win the game, 54-52 over Salem.

For Alliance, Brendan Zurbrugg led the way with 19 points on the night. Behind him was Diego Allen with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

For Salem, Cam Sampson led the way with 20 points. Behind him was Drew Weir who added 14 on the night.

Alliance will be back in action on Friday, as they will travel to West Branch. Salem will also be back in action on Friday on the road, as they travel to Minerva. Don’t miss it on YSN!

MCCLISH IN THE CLUTCH

SALEM OH- Every time Jenna McClish walks into a gym, whether it be in her home of Salem, or on the road you know you’re going to get energy, and one heck of a time watching her play. Her positivity is contagious and has spread through every member of the Lady Quakers basketball team.

Jenna enters her senior season as one of the best leaders in the area. Several coaches that have either worked with, or competed against her praise the fact that she has what it takes to be a coach if that’s something she pursues. It is because she brings the best out in everyone around her. She sets the standard with her work ethic, and then the players around her follow suit.

Jenna is one of many reasons that the Salem Quakers are off to a fantastic start this season. They sit at just one loss, and are at the top of the YSN Power Rankings. They are also in the middle of a three way tie for first in the EBC.

Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell had the chance to chat with Jenna McClish this week after she won Baird Brothers Big Dog Of The Valley. The Salem community backed her up, and she talks about how much that means to her. She also talks about her basketball journey, and so much more. You will not want to miss this exclusive interview with Jenna McClish
