RHODES COMMITS TO VIRGINIA TECH

SALEM OH- After a whirlwind of a freshman season, incoming Salem class of 2024 Carson Rhodes has committed to Virginia Tech to continue his athletic and academic career. He says the Hokies were the program that believed in him from the beginning and their faith made this an easy decision. Carson can now complete his career at Salem without a care in the world concerning his recruitment. He may need to change his walk up song to “Enter Sandman” by Metalica to get ready for life in Blacksburg.

Carson finished the 2020 season with 36.0 IP, and striking out 41 hitters. His final ERA was 4.66, His record on the bump was 5-2. He knows the work doesn’t stop just because he made the commitment. Carson is ready to put his work ethic into overdrive to get his team as far as possible. When asked what his goals were now in high school he simply replied with “Win a state championship.” It would certainly be a feather in the young man’s cap.

Carson took the time to talk about his decision to commit to Virginia Tech on YSN’s Running Point. Here from the future Hokie himself in this exclusive interview with Carson Rhodes, only on YSN.

Salem got on the board in the second inning. Carson Rhodes drove in one when he doubled.

In the top of the fourth inning, Archbishop Hoban tied things up at one when Kepler singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.

Shawn Parnell (Cincinnatti commit) was on the mound for Archbishop Hoban. The bulldog went eight innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out 12.

THE REVENGERS; QUAKERS END CANFIELDS PERFECT SEASON

NORTH CANTON, OH- The last time Salem squared up with Canfield was the first game either team played in over a year.  Many won’t remember the intricacies of that game, only the final score which favored Canfield in a 10-0 route.

So many things have changed since that brisk April Saturday.  For instance, Canfield has rattled off 22 straight victories following that game and took over the state’s top ranking in Division II thanks in part to this Cardinal team’s depth and skill.  Canfield has been the team that everyone had their eye on, watched the scoreboard, and watched streams of their game to see who was next.  They were Ohio High School Baseball’s version of “Goldberg” in the 90’s WCW days.  You knew the outcome because you knew who was involved.  Grit, determination, precision, skill, and enthusiasm.  Every position, every night, one through nine.  Canfield had it all.

All except a loss.

Salem’s team has been built from the blast furnace, the Quakers have been constructed by their naysayers, and those who have chosen to look the other way.  Salem’s motto this year has been “LTF” which stands for Light The Fire.  They’ve taken their pain and turned it into power to the tune of 26-3 going into the Regional Semi’s where they’d face Canfield again, knowing full well that somebody’s season was going to come full circle and end exactly where it started.  This was a collision course that was scripted better than Steven Spielberg ever could.

This was destiny.  The Cardinals were looking for affirmation, and the Quakers were looking for revenge.

So, how did it play out?

Salem got things started in the first inning when Lane Rhodes singled to right field on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

Canfield wasted no time In the bottom of the second inning, the Cardinals tied things up at one when an error in right field scored one run.

The pitching would ice down both offenses for the better part of the game as Rhodes earned the win for Salem. The right-hander went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out five, and walking none.  While Landon Beidelschies took the loss for Canfield. The hurler surrendered three runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out ten and walking one.

Canfield was placed behind the eightball in the fifth when Brock Young doubled on a shot to left field.  Young would later advance to third on a wild pitch and then score on a Nick Coletta sacrifice fly to shallow right field making it 2-1 Quakers.

The following inning the Quakers would strike again on the aggressiveness of Canfield.  Blaze Exline would pop up a bunt in front of the plate that Vinnie Machuga attempted to field, and throw to first, where he found no Cardinal covering.  The speedster, Exline, would steal second base and be moved to third on a sac fly from Lane Rhodes to right field.  Ben Slanker nearly threw out Exline on a frozen rope from the corner of right field to third base.  Then the cleanup hitter, Gavin Wilms would deliver on a jammed inside pitch that the big man would power past the hot corner and into left field to give the Quakers a 3-1 lead.

The difference in this one came throughout the heart of the Quaker order.  RhodesDarius BeckBrock YoungGavin Wilms, and Corey Riesen all had one hit to lead Salem.

The Quakers continue on to the Regional Finals on Saturday at 11am against Archbishop Hoban (Akron),  whereas the Cardinals finish their season at 23 wins and 1 loss.

RHODES NAMED 2021 YSN BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Salem’s Lane Rhodes has been named 2021 Your Sports Network Baseball Player of the Year.

Rhodes has led his Quakers on both sides of the diamond to a 26-3 record and has Salem believing in the “Quaker 9” in 2021.  Rhodes’ selection is more than just numbers on a stat sheet, it’s what he’s done, and who he’s been for this team during his senior campaign.  However, make no mistake about it, The Quaker Captain has been nothing short of impressive along the way.

On the bump, Rhodes has posted a 7-0 record over his opposition, which includes 55.1 innings pitched, a .88 ERA, striking out 66 batters, and posting a pair of complete-game tournament victories at the time of publication.  Oh, and not to mention a no-hitter against his team’s top rival, West Branch.  Defensively, Rhodes also played all over the infield, and wherever he was needed with stints at third base, shortstop, and at first base as well.

Offensively, “Big Game Lane” showed up, and showed off to the tune of a .384 batting average, with 33 hits, with nearly half of those going for extra bases (12 doubles, 2 triples, and 1 home run.)  Rhodes also served as a table-setter in the 3-hole this season, scoring 33 times, driving in 20 runs, and stealing 11 bags along the way.

Again, although the stats are outstanding, it’s the intensity and leadership that Lane Rhodes provides that set him apart this season from each nominee.

While Lane looks to continue his Quaker career in Akron, his next steps will be toward Youngstown as he will join the roster of the YSU Penguins this Fall to continue his academic and athletic career.

Congratulations to Lane Rhodes for a great high school baseball career, and best of luck in all he does moving forward!
