The Crestview Rebels are district champions! After sweeping through the entire tournament the Rebels look forward to the regional semifinals Thursday against Independence. Coach Auer was very pleased with her team’s performance in the championship game on Saturday against South Range. And now she hopes that trend continues in Barberton.

Anthony Hartwig caught up with Coach Auer before their next game. They discuss the championship feeling, preparing for Independence, and much more. Get ready for regionals Rebel fans with Episode 4 of Coach’s Corner with Alisha Auer.

NOTHING GETS PAST SZOLEK

As we got to know the seniors on the Poland volleyball team it was easy to learn how important stability in the program was the last couple of seasons. There is no better example of that than seeing growth of the underclassmen under the same coaching staff. Kenzie Szolek is one of those underclassmen, as a sophomore, she has stepped into the libero position. A position that requires communication and leadership. Kenzie loves being trusted to be the leader of the back row. She says nothing feels better than getting a big time dig for her team. She would know, Kenzie played all 72 sets this season and led her team in digs with 284.  With two more seasons left in her time as a Bulldog it is clear that she will be an important piece to the program’s future success. Good luck getting anything by Szolek for the next two seasons.

Anthony Hartwig headed down to Poland to talk to the sophomore libero. They chat about the senior leadership, having a sister on a different team, and much more. Enjoy the last Poland Volleyball Player Profile of the season Nothing Gets Past Szolek.

HEAR THE HOWL OF THE WOLFE

The Crestview Volleyball team is full of different kinds of leaders. It’s natural when a senior class has eight players. The energy leader of the team is unanimously Preslyn Wolfe. She makes sure everyone in the gym can hear her giving her team energy. This is so important in such a momentum driven sport like volleyball. Often it’s the team with the most consistent energy who comes out on top. Coach Auer raves about Preslyn’s ability to be what her team needs her to be. Not just her energy, but her role on the court. Preslyn plays left back row, but her coach says she has the talent to be a full rotation player on just about any other team in the area. Preslyn is undeniable proof of the depth the Rebel program has.

Our own Anthony Hartwig got a chance to talk with Preslyn. They discuss her energy on the court, her support system, and much more. Crank that volume up to 11 for the latest Rebel Volleyball Player Profile Hear the Howl of the Wolfe.

A PASSION FOR THE GAME

Men’s Volleyball is a growing commodity in the country, especially at the college and professional ranks. Schools such as Ohio State, Cal, USC, and UCLA all have men’s volleyball teams. The USA has a men’s national team. At the high school level however, the opportunity for boys to play volleyball for their school is still scarce. Men’s volleyball is not a recognized OHSAA sport, however there are Ohio high schools that have men’s volleyball teams. They fall under the umbrella of the OHSBVA (Ohio Highschool Boys Volleyball Association). There are 82 high schools in Ohio that have a boys volleyball team. Notable schools in the northeast area are Hoban, Perry, and Edgewood.

For South Range student manager Sammy McDonald he has not let anything get in the way for his passion for the game. The senior says it’s the speed of the sport that caught his eye. Last season he attended team open gyms and got reps with the girls, and this season the coaching staff gave him the opportunity to be a student manager. On top of regularly coming to practices and getting reps, Sammy is responsible for keeping stats during the game while he sits on the bench. He also is another set of eyes that can share insight with the players as a match unfolds. Sammy has aspirations of playing volleyball in college and the reps and experience he gets with the Raiders is a huge help. He is proof that there is always a spot for people that have a passion for the sport they love.

Anthony Hartwig sat down with Sammy this week as the team prepared for their next tournament game. They talk about his passion for the game, his role on the team, and much more. We invite you to enjoy this special Raider Volleyball Profile A Passion For the Game: Sammy McDonald

SISTER ACT: PRIMETIME EDITION

Some of the qualities of sisterhood are love, support, and reliability. It is not hard to see that Anna and Maria Primavera share this everlasting qualities that make sisterhood great. Their bond goes way beyond the one they share on the volleyball court.

Anna the senior of the two knows exactly what it’s like to be a freshman and hold a full rotation spot on varsity. Just four short years ago it was her in those very shoes. The biggest words of wisdom she could give to her sister is to be confident. Maria may be the younger sister you wouldn’t know it based on what you see on the court. They are self admitted very similar players. Both outside hitters, both full rotation, both extremely dangerous swinging their arms. They have an unspoken bond that helps them communicate on the court. Something they say gives them an edge on other teams. One can simply give the other a look to convey a message. No words required. Not to worry though, plenty of words are required to define their relationship.

Anthony Hartwig got the chance to talk to the Primavera sisters together. They talk about their bond on and off the court, how they help each other, and so much more. Please enjoy this special edition of Raider Volleyball Player Profiles Sister Act: Primetime Edition.

WELLSVILLE ICES BLUE DEVILS, LISBON BOWS OUT

COLUMBIANA, OH- Two teams came into the gym, only one could leave continuing their season.  For Lisbon, they were the hot-hand after their upset victory of Heartland Christian earlier in the tournament, but in the end it was the experience of the youthful Wellsville Tigers that walked away to play another day.  Coach Dan McKinstry’s Tigers took the four-set victory 25-13, 25-27, 25-17, 25-11 on Wednesday, it was the third meeting this year-all going the way of Wellsville.

Jenna McNicol paced the EOAC Champions with 42 digs and a trio of aces on the night.  Meaghan Nixon had 9 kills and a pair of aces, while freshmen phenoms Aubri Ramsey and Alana Amato teamed up for 15 kills in the front row.  Emma Smith also was a front-row threat with 8 kills.  Emily McNicol had 4 aces and 15 assists while Greta Cartwright had 17 helpers in the victory.

For the Blue Devils, Maddie Liberati had 16 digs, 12 kills and 6 blocks for Lisbon.  Justyce Vrable had 14 points and a half dozen blocks, while Callie Steed had 9 kills, 5 points, and 14 digs.

Congratulations to Lisbon on a great year, and good luck to the graduating seniors in all their future endeavors.  Good luck to Wellsville as they continue their stellar year.

YSN will have you covered as Wellsville will face-off against Springfield in Columbiana on Saturday at 4pm.  Abiding with OHSAA regulations, the game will be on tape delay.

CAPTAIN MONTGOMERY

Every successful volleyball program needs a strong libero. The absolute leader of the back row making sure everyone is in the right position. For the Crestview Rebels that responsibility falls on Amelia Montgomery, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Montgomery loves the feeling of getting a huge dig when her team needs it. One of three captains voted on by her team Amelia is the vocal leader on the court. She respects that she was voted into her captain role and takes that very seriously.

YSN’s Anthony Hartwig caught up with Amelia to talk about what it means be voted as a captain, her support system, and much more. Take a listen to the latest Rebel Volleyball Player Profile Captain Montgomery.

WILD WILD WESS

The Poland Volleyball team had one of the more dramatic turnarounds in the area. After winning just three games in 2018, the Bulldogs went 11-12 this season with a tournament win under their belt. Junior setter Maddie Wess has been a major part of the team’s success. After having to miss a part of the season with an injury Maddie quickly became one of the better setters in the league. She contributes the raise in her game to the group of setters the team has. Knowing that there are other players who do what she does, and goes through what she does on the court helped her out a lot. Despite playing only 55/72 of her teams sets, Maddie by far led her team in setting stats with 288 assists. She says she loves the feeling of being in control of the offense. She also knows that next season she will be a senior and will have to find ways to fill the void of the eight seniors leaving this season. Maddie is ready to face any challenge that comes her way in the next season.

Anthony Hartwig went down to Poland to catch up with the junior setter. They talk about taking leadership notes from the senior class, team chemistry, and much more! Take a listen to the latest Poland Volleyball Player Profile Wild Wild Wess.

It’s tournament time in Crestview. The volleyball program is on their first district championship in three years. Coach Auer knows things change during tournament time and has gotten her team ready. Coming off a win over United in the sectional finals, the Rebels are set for a district semifinal vs Waterloo.
