LAKEVIEW VOLLEYBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH HEATHER GUTHRIE

CORTLAND OH- Lakeview has been firmly spotted on the top spot of the volleyball power rankings since the beginning of the season. They are on a tear with an undefeated record at the moment, and have only lost two sets all season. As the season winds down, the Bulldogs have a game 2 game lead on second place Girard in the NE8. However, the Indians are no pushover. Lakeview is eyeing a second matchup with Girard who is next on the slate. It is sure to be a rumble in the doghouse on Thursday night.

Head coach Heather Guthrie took the time to hop on to YSN’s Running Point to give us some of the key reasons for Lakeview’s success this season.  She talks with Richie Juliano, and Anthony Hartwig about her team’s individual performances, a preview of the Girard matchup, and much more. CHAMPION FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH THOMAS CONRAD

WARREN OH- In the very competitive Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference’s (MVAC) Gray Tier, The Champion Flashes look to take the next step. The Flashes dropped their first two non-conference games of the season to 5-0 Warren JFK and 4-1 Rootstown before winning three straight games, including two conference matchups to exceed their win total from a season ago.

A breakout game against a very good Ravenna Southeast team, followed by a gritty and gutsy close conference victory against Newton Falls. Joey Fell and Nick Vesey have been the engines that make the offense go, and they went full steam against LaBrae to set Champion up with a 3-2 record at the midway mark of the season.

The Flashes feature matchups with Brookfield, Crestview and Garfield in the second half of the season, with their Week 6 matchup slated to host The 4-1 G-Men of Garrettsville. Champion Head Coach Tom Conrad got the chance to stop by Running Point and discuss with Anthony and Ty about the season so far and the goals going forward for The Flashes. You will not want to miss this YSN EXCLUSIVE with Coach Conrad!

URSULINE IRISH FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 5) WITH DAN REARDON

* Contributed by Anthony Romo *

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Ursuline Irish got back on track last week with a 28-14 victory over a very tough Warren G. Harding squad. The Raiders struck first after a very long touchdown by star quarterback Dalys Jett, but after that Ursuline settled in. Jack Ericson was very efficient through the air for the Irish, connecting on 16-of-20 pass attempts for two touchdowns through the air. Led by the passing attack, Ursuline was able to rattle off 28 unanswered points en route to their victory.

Now looking forward to this week, arguably the biggest game of the year in the Steel Valley Conference will take place as the Irish travel to Rayen Stadium to take on the undefeated Chaney Cowboys. Chaney, who was ranked 4 th in this week’s AP State Poll, knocked off the previously undefeated Canfield Cardinals 16-13 in a defensively dominated contest. The Cowboys will come into Friday night looking to knock off Ursuline for the first time since the resurrection of varsity athletics at Chaney in 2019.

Hear what Coach Reardon has to say about this week’s highly-anticipated matchup in our weekly Coaches Corner from the Golden Dawn!

EDISON FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MIKE COLLOPY

RICHMOND OH- When talking about programs that have steadily improved over the course of the last few years, look no further than The Edison Wildcats. Only a few years removed from a 2019 season which, unfortunately, saw The Wildcats have an 0-10 season. However, a 3-5 campaign in the COVID year and a 8-4 year last season shows the improvements Edison has continued to make.

Of course credit goes to all the kids that have worked so hard to turn the program around, but thanks must also fall on the skipper Mike Collopy’s shoulders. Coach Collopy, a multiple sport coach that has seen plenty of success on the baseball field, has been a huge part in building the football program.

Starting off the season with a perfect 5-0 record, the improvements look like they are continuously being made for The Wildcats. Edison will have a tough road test against The Toronto Red Knights (4-1) on Friday, September 23rd.

Coach Collopy got the chance to stop by Running Point to discuss with Anthony and Ty about the takeaways from the first half of the season, the goals and improvements for the second half and the upcoming matchup with Toronto. All this and more in this edition of Coaches Corner, found EXCLUSIVELY on YSN!

The Cowboys will welcome in the Canfield Cardinals to Rayen Stadium on Friday night as this match up has huge playoff implications in Region 9 of Division 3.

URSULINE IRISH FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 4) WITH DAN REARDON

* Contributed by Anthony Romo

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Every team will look good when winning, but you learn the most about what a team is truly built for when facing adversity. The Ursuline Irish could have easily waved the white flag last Friday night at Stambaugh Stadium as the Austintown Fitch lead blossomed to 42-7 after a 55-yard touchdown run with just under three minutes remaining in the third quarter. But that wouldn’t be the Ursuline way. The Irish were able to spark some momentum offensively, and after 27 unanswered fourth-quarter points, Ursuline found themselves trailing 42-34, with just under one minute remaining in the game, with an onside kick pending. Unfortunately for the Irish, Fitch would recover the onside kick and their comeback hopes would fall just short, as the Falcons would take two kneel-downs and escape with the victory in a battle of two of the area’s top programs.

There was a lot to be learned though from Ursuline’s effort on Friday night, as the Irish showed just how resilient of a bunch they are, and that there is a lot to look forward to as the season progresses. Head Coach Dan Reardon sat down with YSN’s Anthony Romo and Steve Leslie to discuss last week’s crazy game, what to look forward to in this week’s matchup with the Warren G. Harding Raiders, and much more in this week Coaches Corner brought to you by the Golden Dawn.

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Chaney Cowboys traveled across town to Boardman last week to take on a talented Spartans team but showed complete control and dominance in the 40-14 victory. Head coach Seth Antram and the rest of the staff set out to prove why the Cowboys are a team to fear this year and have done so in back to back weeks. This week will be another tough road test as Chaney will travel to Mineral Ridge to take on the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals on Friday night.

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, had the opportunity to catch up with Coach Antram this week from Hackett’s Pub to talk about the huge win over the Spartans in his return to Spartan Stadium, how he and his staff are starting to handle the expectations and buzz around the program while keeping the team focused, what his keys to victory are for a physical Cardinal Mooney team, what the Cowboys are expecting to do moving forward while on this winning streak, and thensome!
