ALL ABOARD THE J TRAIN

SALEM OH- Jackson Johnson is back for his senior season at quarterback for the Quakers. The versatile four-year starter comes off a record-breaking junior season in which he led the Quakers to an 8-4 record and a playoff birth. Jackson joined me this week to talk about developing rapport with his new weapons and how reps and experience help him to make the right reads to put his teammates in the best position possible.

LEOPARDS POUNCE ON SALEM EARLY

LOUISVILLE, OH- They say it’s not how you start, but how you finish.  Monday proved otherwise as Louisville started out with a two out rally in the first inning, scored two, and that’s all they would need to defeat Salem 2-1 in the District Semifinals.

Louisville scored on a single by Cole Miller and a single by Caleb Miller in the first inning.

Anthony Warner was the winning pitcher for Louisville. The hurler went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out eight and walking one.

Carson Rhodes took the tough luck loss for Salem. The pitcher surrendered two runs on seven hits over seven innings, striking out eight.

Darius Beck led Salem with two hits in three at bats.

Louisville had seven hits in the game. Miller and Conner Adelman all had multiple hits for Louisville.

The Leopards will face Marlington on Wednesday at 5.  Salem’s season comes to a close at 18-8.

BECK IS WHERE IT’S AT

SALEM, OH- The longtime Quaker Backstop for the Salem baseball team is entering his final descent in the black and red uniform, but it’s not one he’s going to give up without a fight.

Darius Beck is the tenured leader of this squad from behind the dish.  The ultimate communicator, he’s the first and last line of defense for Mike DeBarr’s Quaker 9, and he’s been every bit as entertaining to watch as he’s been a nightmare for opposing lineups.  Beck possesses the lost art of showmanship a catcher must have to complete their job.  An ambassador of the umpires, a salesman at times for his pitching staff, as well as an agitator on offense.

Beck is dynamic in so many ways, which makes it even more of a challenge to shut him out of a game plan.

DB has also great self-awareness in the sense that he knows what he brings to the table.  He knows opposing coaches need to stop him- and he also knows they can’t.

We caught up with the Quaker Catcher to talk about his ride to this point, what’s ahead, and so much more.

So grab two turntables and a microphone and enjoy this week’s Salem Baseball Player Profile: Beck is Where It’s At!

QUAKERS SET FIRE TO THE RAIN; BLANK GIRARD

SALEM, OH- Salem is on a mission, and not much will stand in the way of accomplishing it.  Especially the rain.

Salem hurler Gavin Wilms didn’t allow a single run against Girard, throwing a complete game shutout and leading Quakers to a 12-0 victory on Wednesday

Jackson Johnson led Salem to victory by driving in four runs. Johnson went 2-for-3 at the plate. Double J drove in runs on a home run in the first, a groundout in the second, and a single in the fourth.

Salem notched six runs in the fourth inning. The Quaker offense in the inning came from singles by Lance BaileyJohnson, and Wilms, a walk by Blaize Exline, and a double by Darius Beck.

One bright spot for Girard was a single by Jake Dohy in the fifth inning.

Wilms led the Quakers to victory on the hill. The righty lasted five innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out nine and walking one.

Nate Freeland took the loss for Girard. The hurler allowed four hits and six runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two.

Salem had ten hits in the game. WilmsBrock YoungJohnson, and Beck each managed multiple hits for the QuakersBeckJohnsonYoung, and Wilms each managed two hits to lead the team. Salem tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Exline led the way with two.

Dohy led Girard with one hit in three at-bats.

BURT BRINGS THE HURT

SALEM OH- Surprise! Surprise! The Salem Quakers have pitching. A four-headed monster between Gavin Wilms, Brock Young, Carson Rhodes and of course, Cayden Burt.  A guy that takes complete control of the mound when he steps on it, Burt has a composure that tons of athletes wish they possessed.  Coming into this season, Burt has logged the third most innings pitched (IP) on the team, while simultaneously having the lowest Earned Run Average (ERA) on The Quakers .

Dipping below 2.00, Burt’s ERA is one to marvel at, considering the very tough and competitive Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC) that Salem plays in.  A team that started off 1-3 on the season, some had The Quakers already done for the season. However, the arms stepped up and helped lead Salem to 12 consecutive victories in the regular season, highlighted by a handful of shutouts!

Cayden Burt being responsible for a shutout in that stretch, showcases that he knows the ins and outs around the mound. Able to pitch-to-contact and trust his defense when he needs to, the senior is also able to dial it back to ring up a big strikeout when needed.  Salem and Cayden are determined to show everyone that they are not a parody of themselves from a year ago. Even if it means opening eyes one pitch at a time.

You do not want to miss the EXCLUSIVE interview with Salem senior, Cayden Burt as he joined the boys of Running Point. Only on YSN.
