FOREVER YOUNG

SALEM OH- In a deck full of aces in The Salem Quakers Baseball world, Brock Young stands out. For one, when you can pitch a quality game against a quality team such as TSouth Range Raiders, you are doing something right! However, pitching Salem to victory that night, The Quakers have been red hot since. Compiling multiple complete games amongst the pitchers in this rotation, Salem has depth for days.

After starting off 1-3, The Salem senior talked about the team needing to find an identity and how the team was able to turn the slow start around.  Looking to keep on proving the doubters wrong, Salem looks for a special June one pitcher at a time!

GAVIN GIVES IT ALL

SALEM OH- It’s been a trying season for the Salem baseball team. After the year got off to a start that no one wanted to see, they found fire and mounted a huge winning streak. Now, their goal is to carry as much momentum into the postseason as possible. Gavin Wilms is good at carrying large objects, and he’ll try to shoulder a big part of the team’s success going forward.

Wilms does a lot of great work on the mound for a Salem team who thrives on their pitching staff. When you see Gavin get the start, you just know that Salem is going to have an opportunity to win the game. That’s what Wilms does best, he keeps his team in games. And at the end of the day, that’s the first job of a starting pitcher. It goes beyond the flashy strikeout numbers, and no hitters, which Wilms is more than capable of doing. However, at his core he is simply a strong competitor that will do whatever it takes to help his team put their best foot forward.

Wilms currently carries the best ERA on the team with a clip of 1.17.  That’s on a pitching staff that has four pitchers with ERA’s under 3.  Safe to say Wilms and his partners are a tough puzzle to crack. For Gavin, having multiple arms that can hold their own takes a lot of pressure off of him to be perfect in every outing.

We got Gavin to join Running Point this week to tell us all about his baseball journey. He talks with Anthony Romo, Richie Juliano, and Anthony Hartwig about how his team turned the ship around, what his favorite things are about Salem and so much more. So sit down with a nice beverage and catch up with Salem baseball in their latest player profile.

RHODES OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION

SALEM, OH- The Youth Movement is among us. Leading the charge in the area on the diamond is a freshly minted 16-year-old who is less concerned about driving a car, and more interested about driving in runs, and torching his 94-mile-per-hour fastball past opposing hitters.

Carson Rhodes burst on the scene last year, and in his freshman campaign, showcased one of the liveliest arms, and personalities this area has seen in some time. Last year, he was able to learn the ropes from a great class of seniors, and get in wherever was needed for the Quaker 9. In 2022,

Rhodes has been looked to for leadership, and to fill many roles for Salem- a role that has developed into quite the winning streak for the Quakers in April. YSN’s DJ Yokley had the chance to catch up with the sophomore standout on this week’s Salem Player Profile: RHODES OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION.

SALEM OH-The Salem Quakers identity is dangerous! As a slow start to the season may have had some pump the brakes on The Quakes. However, for Coach Michael DeBarr, it was about finding Salem’s identity that was missing in the 1-3 start of the season. As we know, Salem has turned things around thanks in part to some phenomenal performance by the pitching staff on the mound.

With guys like Gavin WIlms and Carson Rhodes, achieving feats such as 19 consecutive scoreless innings in the season, does not come without an infusion of confidence. That confidence is operating at high tide half way through the season. Catch the wave on this episode of Coaches Corner!
