TIGERS TAKE THE LEOPARDS SPOTS

CANFIELD OH- In a captivating display on the second day of the South Range Holiday Hoops Classic, Howland left a lasting impression as they dismantled Louisville with a commanding 47-28 victory.

Howland’s standout senior, Alyssa Massucci, led the charge with an impressive 21-point performance, showcasing her scoring prowess and leadership on the court. Jesse DeSalvo added 9 points, contributing to the team’s well-rounded offensive effort. Maya Kabanscek chipped in with 6 points, further solidifying Howland’s dominance.

Louisville fought valiantly, with Brooke Haren scoring 12 points and Courtney Barwick adding 9 points to the team’s total. However, Howland’s defensive prowess and offensive efficiency proved insurmountable.

With this convincing win, Howland advances to an 8-1 record, leaving a strong statement as they prepare for the continuation of their season on January 3rd against Green. TIGERS TAKE TWO IN HOLIDAY HOOPS CLASSIC

In a closely contested basketball matchup, the Massillon-Washington Tigers emerged victorious over the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals with a final score of 57-48.

The first quarter witnessed a competitive exchange of baskets, with the Massillon-Washington Tigers holding a narrow 14-13 lead over the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals. However, by halftime, Mooney managed to flip the script, capturing the lead at 25-22 as they headed into the halftime locker room.

The third quarter proved to be a turning point in the game, with the Massillon Tigers outscoring the Cardinals 24-11. This surge allowed the Tigers to take a commanding 46-36 lead heading into the final quarter. Despite a competitive effort in the last period, the Cardinals were unable to overcome the deficit, ultimately falling to Massillon with a final score of 57-48.

MiKiya Edwards was named the Player of the Game for Massillon-Washington, delivering an impressive performance with 18 points and 6 rebounds. LaNia Moore added 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Telia Russell contributed 12 points and 3 rebounds.
For the Cardinals, Samantha Rottunno led the scoring effort with 13 points, Talecia Huff contributed 12 points and 2 rebounds, and Sophia Diorio secured a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

With the win, Massillon-Washington improved to an 8-3 record and is set to host Dover (6-3) on Sunday, January 3rd. Meanwhile, Cardinal Mooney (2-6) will host the Holy War against Ursuline (4-5), also on Sunday. CANFIELD OH- Howland celebrated a monumental day at the South Range Holliday Hoops Classic as senior standout Alyssa Massucci achieved her 1,000th career point, guiding her team to a dominant 67-43 victory over Hathaway Brown.

Massucci’s remarkable accomplishment was not only a personal milestone but a testament to her consistent excellence on the court. The senior dynamo showcased her scoring prowess with an impressive 31-point performance, leading Howland to a commanding win.

Joining Massucci in the scoring effort, Emily Adams contributed 8 points, further solidifying Howland’s offensive firepower.

Hathaway Brown fought valiantly, with Molly Castellanos leading the team with 15 points and Emily Morgan adding 9 points. However, Howland’s overall dominance proved insurmountable.

The win sets the stage for an exciting Day 2 matchup for Howland against Louisville, as they continue to make waves at the event. Hathaway Brown, meanwhile, will face off against Hoban in their second game, seeking to rebound from this challenging defeat.

TIGERS WALK IT OFF ON THE FREE THROW LINE

CANFIELD OH- In a captivating matchup at the South Range Holliday Hoops Classic, Massillon Washington and Hilliard Davidson treated fans to a rollercoaster of emotions. After a stunning 20-0 run by Hilliard Davidson in the second quarter, Massillon Washington staged a remarkable comeback, sealing a dramatic 35-34 victory with a walk-off free throw by Telia Russell.

The first half saw Hilliard Davidson dominating, taking a commanding 26-11 lead into halftime, thanks in part to a stellar 20-point second quarter. However, Massillon Washington, undeterred by the deficit, mounted a relentless comeback in the second half.

Key to Massillon’s resurgence was the standout performance by Makyah Edwards, who contributed 11 points. Telia Russell added 10 crucial points, and Hannah Nicola chipped in 7 points. The team’s collective effort culminated in a stunning turnaround and a walk-off free throw for the win.

Hilliard Davidson showcased their three-point shooting prowess, sinking 5 team threes distributed among four different players. Anna Wile led the scoring for Davidson with 10 points, and Sophie Onderak added 5 points.

MOONEY PUTS A SHOCK INTO THE TIGERS

CANFIELD OH- In a surprising turn of events at South Range, the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals delivered a shocker by defeating the Springfield Tigers with a final score of 44-35.

From the opening tip-off, Mooney took control of the game, establishing an early lead of 9-5 in the first quarter. Their dominance continued into halftime, where they extended their lead to 23-9. By the end of the third quarter, Mooney maintained a comfortable advantage, leading 35-22. Despite Springfield’s efforts to rally in the final stretch, Mooney secured the victory with a final score of 44-35.

Sophia Diorio emerged as the standout performer for Mooney, earning the title of Player of the Game with an impressive double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Katie Pregibon contributed 9 points, while Samantha Rotunno added 8 points to Mooney’s scoring effort. Talecia Huff made her presence felt with 6 points and 6 rebounds, showcasing the team’s well-rounded performance.

Meanwhile, Springfield, now standing at 7-3, will engage in a heated matchup against their longtime rival, the South Range

HOWLAND OH- This season has been special so far for Howland Girls Basketball.  Senior Gia Hoso stands tall as a cornerstone of leadership and unwavering dedication. A vital member of a seasoned senior class featuring five other players, Gia epitomizes the essence of hard work and mentorship that has defined her team for the past two years.

Remarkably, last season saw no seniors on the roster, thrusting Gia and her fellow seniors into the roles of seasoned veterans. This unique experience has shaped them into the guiding force behind the team, setting the tone for success both on and off the court.

At the heart of Gia’s influence is her unshakable work ethic, a guiding light for any aspiring underclassman. No one in the Howland roster matches Hoso’s commitment to self-improvement. Her tireless efforts provide a roadmap to success, inspiring teammates to follow suit in their pursuit of greatness.

Gia’s leadership extends beyond the confines of personal development. She is a vocal force on the court, consistently encouraging her teammates to reach their full potential. Not one to point fingers in moments of challenge, Gia exemplifies a leadership style that fosters unity and resilience. Her impact is palpable, contributing significantly to Howland’s mental fortitude throughout the season’s early stages.

As the 2023 season unfolds, Gia has already showcased her prowess, averaging an impressive 7.9 points per game and amassing a total of 63 points through eight games. These statistics, though impressive, only scratch the surface of her overall influence on the team.

Gia Hoso’s impending departure from Howland will undoubtedly leave a massive void, but her legacy alongside her senior teammates will endure. Their collective leadership ensures that the program will continue to uphold the standards set by Gia, maintaining a tradition of excellence for years to come. As Gia’s final chapter unfolds, she remains a beacon of inspiration, a symbol of resilience, and a driving force behind the success of Howland.

HOWLAND TAKES CLASH OF THE TIGERS

NEWTON FALLS OH- In the wild, Tigers are known to be fiercely territorial animals and will quite often assert their dominance on other tigers that stumbled upon their land. In Trumbull County, a pair of tigers call the same area home in The Newton Falls Tigers and The Howland Tigers, taking it to the court to determine Trumbull County’s top tiger!

Howland started fast by getting on an early 9-0 run to take an early advantage on the road at Newton Falls. Alex Henry helped his team with 7 points in the first quarter for Howlad, helping them hold a 13-5 lead after the opening quarter. The Tigers from Howland were able to keep pace in the second, while Newton Falls also, unfortunately, paced themselves with the previous quarter as Howland outscored The Falls 16-5 in the second. Effectively holding a 29-10 lead at the halftime buzzer.

Starting the second half, Newton Falls’ Jabriel Rufai got the energy going in the gym with a one handed dunk and a three pointer to follow as The Falls were trying to get momentum back in their court! However, Howland still managed to be a bucket better at 12-9 scoring in the third quarter and a 41-19 Howland lead after three. Up by 22 points, Howlandwas playing with all the momentum as they attempted to ride out the lead en route to a .500 record. Newton Falls would put together their strongest quarter of the night, outsourcing Howland 19-10 in the fourth! But it would not be enough, as Howland is Trumbull County’s Top Tiger this year with a 51-38 win over The Falls.

The Player of the Game performance was in the hands of Alex Henry, as The Howland point guard dished and served to his teammates, getting them involved, while also scoring a game-high 22 points in the contest! Anthony Chieffo followed Henry in scoring on Howland with 8 points, while Luca Fronzaglio and Chris Fenton each had 5 points. Newton Falls was led by Cameron Huff who finished with 9 points, followed by Jabriel Rufai with 7 points and Ethan Powell with 6 points. Howland (4-4) next matchup will come after the holiday on Thursday, December 28th when they travel to Hudson to battle The Explorers (6-2). Meanwhile, Newton Falls (2-4) will try to right the ship when they host Lakeview (4-2) on Friday, December 29th. MASSUCCI NAMED MVP AS HOWLAND WINS THIRD STRAIGHT TONI ROSS TOURNAMENT

Howland continued its impressive basketball campaign, securing a third consecutive Toni Ross Tournament title on Friday with a 72-58 victory over St. Joseph Academy. Alyssa Massucci, displaying exceptional skill, clinched the tournament MVP for the second consecutive season, scoring a remarkable 49 points in the two games combined.

In the championship game, Massucci led the scoring charge for Howland, contributing a stellar 27 points. Sophia Powell added 14 points, while Gia Hoso and Amia Silvers each contributed 10 points, showcasing the team’s balanced offensive prowess.

The Tigers, now boasting a 7-1 record, look to maintain their momentum in the South Range Holiday Hoops Classic on Thursday. In a rematch against St. Joseph Academy, Howland is primed for another competitive showdown, building on their success in the Toni Ross Tournament. The team’s resilience and individual performances, especially from Massucci, underscore their determination to excel in the upcoming challenges.

TIGERS KEEP GRIP AT THE TOP

MINERAL RIDGE OH- In a highly anticipated clash for first place in the MVAC, Springfield secured a thrilling victory over previously undefeated Mineral Ridge on Thursday night, claiming a 54-49 win and snapping Ridge’s flawless record.

Jameka Brungard emerged as a powerhouse for the Tigers, dominating with an impressive 25 points and a staggering 22 rebounds. Mariana Tuscano showcased her clutch abilities, contributing 13 points and sinking a crucial go-ahead three-pointer with under a minute remaining. Ava Vecchione added 10 points to Springfield’s well-rounded offensive effort.

Mineral Ridge fought hard, led by Ava Hulett’s formidable 25-point performance. Norah Schneider and Sullivan Sandy contributed with 7 and 6 points, respectively, but Springfield’s resilience proved decisive.

The turning point came in a pivotal third quarter, where the Tigers surged ahead, ultimately solidifying their top spot in the MVAC. As the final buzzer sounded, Springfield celebrated a hard-fought victory that not only elevated them to 7-2 but also handed Mineral Ridge their first loss of the season.

Looking ahead, Springfield is set to face Cardinal Mooney at South Range on December 28th, while Mineral Ridge will hit the road to take on Leetonia on December 27th. HOWLAND OH- Howland made a statement in the Toni Ross Tournament, claiming their first conference win of the season with a triumphant 58-49 victory over Warren Harding.

Alyssa Massucci led the scoring charge for Howland with an outstanding 22 points. Contributing to the offensive effort were Jessie DeSalvo and Amia Silvers, each adding 12 points.

With this crucial conference victory, Howland advances to a 6-1 record, signaling their competitive prowess as they progress through the season. The team now looks ahead to the tournament championship, where they will face St Joes Academy at home tomorrow in what promises to be an exciting matchup at approximately 7:30 PM.
