VOTES ARE IN: BIG DOGS OF THE YEAR NAMED

EAST PALESTINE, OH- After a week of votes, the tally is finally in for the 2022 Baird Brothers BIG Dog of the Year Winners.

In its first year ever up for voting, wrestling was quickly shown to be a popular sport among voters.  Although it would be Liberty that would show up in a big way to crown Dominic Leone this year’s winner!

For girls hoops, it’s always a tough draw- as voting numbers remain the highest in this category.  For Struthers’ Faith Stellato- she received a backing as good as her jumper and landed as the Queen of the Court in this years contest.

As for the gentlemen- Boardman’s Trey DePietro never blinked throughout his career, and the community backed him with the highest vote totals of any competitor this year to etch his name in Big Dogs History.

Congratulations to all our nominees throughout the season, and for their success on and off the floor.  We’re grateful to be able to help shine more light on student-athletes through this contest with the help of our friends at Baird Brothers.

YSN LEGENDS OF THE PAST: AARON WALKER

Arguably one of the most successful baseball players to emerge from Columbiana County, Ohio was the 6’3 South Paw from East Palestine, Aaron Walker.  His high school numbers as a Bulldog were eye-popping with being a 3-time Tri-County All-Star, First-Team All Ohio in 2000 (15-1 record) and if all of that wasn’t enough, earning a Division 1 scholarship to join the Georgia Tech Baseball Team.

All of that aside, Walker was able to live out his dreams of being selected in the 30th round of the 2004 MLB draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

When all was said and done, AW decided it was time to give back to the game he loved by taking up coaching.  Walker began with his high school rival, Columbiana Clippers, before returning to the Brown and White where he is still today.  Walker and his father, Doug, are assistant coaches for the Bulldogs- and enjoy not only working with the student-athletes but working alongside each other.

We caught up with the lefty for our latest edition of YSN Legends of the Past: Aaron Walker.

THE FATHER TIME EFFECT

By Scott Mincher

During the NFL’s wildcard weekend the young quarterbacks showed flashes of greatness, but it seems that almost every year there are at least one or two all-time greats battling it out in an attempt to add to their championship resume. It was no different this year and despite their best efforts you have to wonder if Brees and Brady’s best shot at another Super Bowl ring is in the rearview mirror. It certainly brings up an interesting topic of discussion and something in sports I’ve always found to be tantalizing. At what age do a player’s skills start to diminish? How old is too old and does hanging on to the game for too long taint a superstar’s legacy?

These questions can’t help but make me think of Michael Jordan my favorite athlete growing up as a kid in Campbell Ohio. It still feels weird picturing MJ in that Washington Wizards jersey and even though I owned a Jordan Wizards jersey as a kid It was the first first time since I could vividly remember in my earliest days of watching sports that I debated whether watching him felt the same as it did when he was king of the Bulls dynasty in the ’90s. Don’t get me wrong like any basketball fan I always was enamored with watching Jordan hoop. But the Washington years just felt different. As a kid when you see something or someone as your favorite or the best It’s hard to not be partial and to admit that that person or thing has weaknesses or flaws just like it can be in some ways as an adult. For the first time in MJ’s career, he looked human. That’s not to say that he still wasn’t a pretty damn good player with the Wizards. Despite an injury-plagued 2001-02 season, he led the team in scoring (22.9 ppg), assists (5.2 APG), and steals (1.42 SPG). However, torn cartilage in his right knee ended Jordan’s season after only 60 games, the fewest he had played in a regular-season since playing 17 games after returning from his first retirement during the 1994–95 season. He averaged 24.3 points, 5.4 assists, and 6.0 rebounds, and shot 41.9% from the field in his 53 starts. A lot of NBA players would do anything for a stat line like that, but because Jordan always wanted to be the best at everything the bar spectators had for him and the bar he set for himself was higher than the sky and at the time because of that it resulted in many fans viewing Jordan’s tenure with Washington as a decent one, that was miles away from the legendary Chicago dynasty leader that so many watched. At that time I think every NBA fan wanted to see if Michael would remain the best player in the world and his time with the Wizards still had great moments that were a must-watch for even casual sports viewers and although he might not have been quite the same Mike, he was still a mega catch and that’s extraordinary!

Another guy that captivated the hearts of the sports world was Brett Favre. Favre was a 9x Pro Bowler and Super Bowl XXXI champion quarterback with the Green Bay Packers but, in his last years played with the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings. His tenure in Green Bay produced its fair share of iconic moments and with many wondering what the late 30’s QB had left in the tank his season with the Jets in 2008 started well. in Week 4 of the 2008 season, he threw six touchdowns against the Arizona Cardinals, a personal best and one shy of the NFL record. This performance led to him being selected as the FedEx Air Player of the Week. By Week 12, the Jets had compiled an 8–3 record, including a win over the previously undefeated Tennessee Titans. However, the Jets lost four of the last five games of the season, including the final game against AFC East divisional opponent Miami, who had acquired quarterback Chad Pennington after he was released from the Jets to make room for Favre. In those five games, Favre threw eight interceptions and only two touchdown passes, bringing his season total to twenty-two of each. Favre had complained of shoulder pain and had an MRI performed on December 29, 2008, which revealed a torn biceps tendon in his right shoulder. After the 2008 season had ended, in mid-January 2009, Favre told Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum, “it may be time to look in a different direction” regarding the quarterback position. On February 11, 2009, Favre informed the Jets that he was retiring after 18 seasons. He remained part of the Jets organization until April 28, 2009, when the Jets released Favre from his contract, thus allowing him to sign anywhere he wanted. By May 2009, he was officially cut from the Jets Reserve/Retired list. After an offseason of speculation, Favre officially signed with the Minnesota Vikings on August 18, 2009. He would go on to have a landmark season in which he surpassed former Vikings defensive end, Jim Marshall, for consecutive starts at one position, with 291, became the first quarterback in NFL history to defeat every one of the league’s 32 franchises since the NFL first expanded to 32 franchises in 2002, surpassed Dan Marino’s previous record for four-touchdown games, and was named to his 11th Pro Bowl. The Vikings finished 12–4 and advanced to the NFC Championship game, ultimately losing in overtime to the eventual Super Bowl XLIV champion New Orleans Saints. Despite the loss, Favre set playoff records for pass completions and passing yards previously held by Joe Montana. The next year during the 2010 season Favre achieved two milestones. He threw for his 500th touchdown and 70,000th yard against the New York Jets. On November 7, 2010, in a game against the Arizona Cardinals, Favre threw for a career-high 446 yards while rallying the Vikings from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to win in overtime. On December 13, 2010, due to a sprained shoulder, Favre was marked inactive for the game against the New York Giants ending his consecutive regular-season start streak at 297. Favre started a total of 321 games including post-season appearances. On December 20, 2010, while playing the Chicago Bears outside at TCF Bank Stadium due to the collapse of the roof of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, Favre sustained a concussion after being sacked by Bears defensive end Corey Wootton. As a rattled Favre was helped to his feet by Vikings’ athletic trainer Eric Sugarman, he asked, “Suge, what are the Bears doing here?”. This would be his final appearance in an NFL game. Farve would later have some post-NFL health issues are another effect from playing a contact sport, Not to mention him playing it into his 40’s.

Age will always have an impact on a player’s body and many times a negative one. But at the time many football experts argued that Farve’s first season with the Vikings at age 40 was the best of his career and it makes you wonder if like what Jordan was able to do in more than a few games with Washington when he really shined If some superstars in sports at times do get better with age. No one knows how running back greats Jim Brown and Barry Sanders would have fared if they decided to play another 5 years or so and not retired when they were playing at an elite level, and It seems somebody like Tom Brady in his age 42 season is as savvy as ever, even if some of his physical skills have started to diminish. The bottom line is I believe that some of the brightest stars in sports have shown that even if father time is undefeated you’re only as old as you feel and if an athlete can’t do things quite the same at forty as they did when they were twenty it doesn’t mean that peak level performance is off the table in other aspects of their game. Let’s face it no sane football fan would turn down being able to watch Jim Brown or Barry Sanders in the modern NFL regardless of what their age would be.

Sports icons joining new teams may feel weird and take some time to get used to, especially if they’ve been with one team for most of their career, but Fave will always be a Packer, just like MJ will always be a Bull and weather they or anybody before or after them tried or tries to play for a couple of years or a couple of decades just try to enjoy the show as much as possible because even the best of the best will someday have to deal with the father time effect.

GAME TIME, ANY TIME; YSN 24/7 COMING SOON

EAST PALESTINE, OH- There’s a lot of news coming out of the YSN Think Tank this Fall, but there has been something missing from the conception of YSN that has been long-awaited and this October, will come to fruition.

YSN 24/7 will allow fans, family, and friends to stream LIVE games to their Roku or Fire TV at no cost.  YSN 24/7 will also provide the opportunity for The Valley’s first around the clock streaming network that will provide games at any time of the day or night, year-round.  “We feel that there’s a model of consistency and content with our network that can provide 24-hour feed for sports fans, and enthusiasts that will bring even more attention to our student-athletes, schools, and sponsors,” says YSN Founder, DJ Yokley.

Fans will also be able to tune into featured games by the sport that will be swapped out on a weekly basis to allow fresh content to be provided.  “We are committed to continuing our archives in YSN OnDemand- however, we felt the opportunity to open up to other audiences under the streaming umbrella was vital with our growth pattern,” Yokley added.

YSN 24/7 is set to be available in Mid-October in Roku and Fire TV app markets.

For more information on YSN, log on to YSNLive.com, or download the YSN App for Apple or Android devices.

YSN SIGNS ON AS TITLE SPONSOR OF 40TH PENN-OHIO GAME

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Your Sports Network has reached an agreement with executives for the Penn-Ohio All-Star Game that will make them the presenting sponsor for the 2019 grand exhibition held each summer.  This year’s game will be held at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania on June 26 at 7PM.

The game was streamed on YSN last year when it was held at Salem High School.  “This is our second year of involvement with what we feel is one of the most prestigious all-star football games in the country.  We’re thrilled to be more involved this year, and hope that we can continue to progress the game with our service to make it an even better experience for the student-athletes,” said YSN Founder and CEO, DJ Yokley.  “We live in an area that is a hotbed of talent for athletics of all types, it’s an honor to provide coverage for those who want more than just a highlight,”  Yokley added.

2019 will mark the 40th year of the Penn-Ohio Game, and each year the goal of the associations behind the game is to award as many scholarships as possible to student-athletes from Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.  Over the years, the QCFCA has awarded over $183,000 in scholarships from game proceeds to Ohio student-athletes.  In order to continue the area’s finest all-star game and provide continued scholarship opportunities to local athletes, local sponsorship is needed for the game.

“It’s such a great game and a great cause.  We hope this will be the beginning of a long and prosperous relationship with YSN.” said Penn-Ohio Football Classic President Tony Foster.

YSN will feature a live audio broadcast for the game and will have a tape-delayed presentation later that evening via their website and Facebook Live.

CANFIELD, OH- Basketball Fans and supporters turned out in droves during last night’s inaugural YSN Charity All-Star Basketball Games.  Proceeds raised during the event are to be donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand to help fight childhood cancer.  In front of a nearly capacity crowd at South Range High School, and over 7,000 viewers on YSNLive.com the showcase of over 20 different schools under the YSN banner proved to be top-notch entertainment.

The girls led things off with some serious star-power.  Ursuline standout and Pitt recruit, Dayshanette Harris started things off with a three-pointer (11 points on the night) for Team Blatch.  Also showing off the hot-hand last night was Crestview Senior, Haley Eskra who dialed long distance one more time for her Coach and fans and finished with 5 points.

For Team Nittoli, Poland’s Sarah Bury led the way with 14 points and was voted YSN All-Star Game MVP as she cashed in clutch free throws down the stretch to help her team to a 64-61 victory.

Also contributing in the victory were Struthers’ Trinity McDowell and East Liverpool’s Emma Ludwig who had 8 points apiece.

The boys game proved to be a high-flying affair and shined a light on the top-tier talent in Northeast Ohio.  There were dunks, alley-oops, and fans were treated to plenty of splash-downs from beyond the arc.  East Liverpool’s Gabriel Roach led all scorers with 19 points while putting on a show with numerous dunks to give Team Conley the victory 103-95 over Team Stanton.  Roach was also voted by the fans as the game’s Most Valuable Player.

For Team Stanton, Girard’s Matt Payich set the tone with some incredible play of his own adding several rim-rocking dunks and also contributed from beyond the arc.

We wish to thank all involved in these games as we feel they were the most fun games we’ve seen in an All-Star Game.  Final totals are still rolling in for what was raised for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, so stay tuned for the amazing show of generosity exhibited on March 20, 2019.

BIG DOGS OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED

With over 410,000 votes during the final poll, the first-ever Baird Brothers/YSN Big Dogs of the Valley Players of the Year were awarded during intermission of the YSN All-Star Game last night.  The award was based on three separate pieces of data which were weighted and scored.

For the girls, Beaver Local’s Jenna Riccardo will wear the crown for 2019.  Riccardo won the Week 1 vote for BDOV, and was nominated 11 out of the 12 weeks the contest was held.  In only her junior season, Jenna became the all-time leading scorer for the Beavers.  She also averaged a double-double this year with 23 points, and 13.3 rebounds per game alongside her 2.6 steals and nearly two blocks to boot.  She also was recognized for being the Columbiana County player of the year, and most recently was named third-team All-Ohio.

Taking home the award for the guys is Lisbon Senior, Justin Sweeney.  A young man who’s battled through many obstacles just to be on the court this season.  However, when he stepped back on the floor, he owned it.  After returning to the court less than 3 months after reconstructive knee surgery, Justin came back to average 21 points per game with 8 rebounds in 2019 while becoming Lisbon’s All-Time Leading Scorer.  Sweeney took home the Week 4 honors for BDOV, and had nominations in each week thereafter.  Earlier this week, Justin was named to the Division IV All-Ohio team.

Congratulations to both Jenna and Justin from all of us at YSN, and on behalf of Baird Brothers.  An extraordinary season for both players, and well-deserved accomplishments this season from many outlets.
