EAGLES EYE SEASON SPLIT WITH RANGE

HUBBARD, Ohio

It took 3 innings for the Hubbard Eagle bats to get fired up but once they started, they couldn’t be stopped.

Carrying a no-hitter into the bottom of the 4thinning, South Range’s Billy Skripac had notched 7 strikeouts while only giving up 1 walk through his first 3 innings of work.

A walk, an error, and a hit by pitch would load the bases for the Hubbard Eagles before backtoback singles plated all three of the Dirty Bird baserunners. Holding the Raiders to no runs in the top half of the 5th, the Dirty Birds moved in to the next half inning with momentum firmly in their hands.

After Evan Jarvis would single and eventually reach third thanks to a throwing error and a pass ball, sophomore Jake Hettrick would plate Jarvis with a sacrifice fly to right field.

With the bases cleared and one away the Raiders helped prolong the Eagles’ inning by making an error and then walking another man on. Already with a good day at the plate, Albert Gerlick showed up big once again with an RBI infield single for the Eagles. A sacrifice fly from Ian Wukelich for his 3rd RBI of the game would tie the game up at 6, then Gerlick would eventually score thanks to a wild pitch and give Hubbard their first lead of the game.

Looking to close out a big conference win the Eagles brought in Mikey Zapka. Zapka, 3-0 on the season, would close things out for the Dirty Birds to get a 7-6 win, allowing only 1 hit through his 2 innings of work.

KOHLER COOLS OFF EAGLES

CANFIELD OH- Hubbard came into Mondays matchup at South Range with only one conference loss on the season, and ahead of the Raiders in the standings. The Eagles offense brought six hitters with averages above .400 coming in to the day. Bree Kohler was able to keep them in check though, as she held Hubbard to just 2 hits in the Raiders 13-0 win in 5 innings.

Kohler set the tone in the first inning, quickly retiring the Eagles 1,2,3. Then in the bottom of the inning with two on, and two outs Kelly Szolek came up with a clutch 2 RBI double that sparked a massive two out rally from the Raiders. They would score 6 runs in the inning and bat a round.

Haley Croyle seemed to calm down after that hiccup. She held the Raiders off the scoreboard in the next two innings. But the Raiders wanted to go home early on this night and would eventually blast ahead for seven more runs in the 4th inning to set up the run rule victory.

Szolek went 2-3 on the day with a walk. She hit in 3 RBI and scored a run. For her efforts, Szolek was named Baird Brothers Player Of The Game. Jillian Strecansky was perfect at the plate. She went 3-3 with 2 runs scored and a RBI. Madi Dado, Jamie Feren, Taylor Smesko, and Kohler each added RBIs.

Kohler was on fire in the circle and kept the potent Eagles offense in check. Her final line was 5.0 IP 2 H 0 R 1 BB 6 K.

Only 4 of the 13 Raider runs were charged to Croyle. She struck out 5, and walked 5.

RAIDERS GIVE HUBBARD MONDAY BLUES

CANFIELD, OH – The South Range Raiders hosted the Hubbard Eagles in the first game of the season series on Monday night. The Raiders looked to stay undefeated in the NE8 and the Eagles were looking to give South Range their first league loss. Brandon Mikos started and finished the game on the rubber for South Range and Dylan Durkos started and finished the game for Hubbard. The Eagles grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but South Range grabbed a 4-2 lead of their own in the bottom half of the first. After that, the Raiders took control and would slowly extend their lead to 7-2 by the 4th inning and added 1 run in the 6th to get a demanding 8-2 victory over Hubbard.

For the Raiders, 13 total hits, 8 RBI’s. Brandon Mikos: 12 K’s, 7 IP, 5 hits against, 0 ER’s, 3 for 4 with 2 singles and 1 double. Shane Lindstrom: 2 for 3 with 2 singles. Mike Perry: 1 for 3 with 3 RBI’s.

HUBBARD LEAVES RAIDERS SHIPWRECKED

HUBBARD, Ohio

Five different players drove in runs for the Hubbard Eagles to back the pitching of Mikey Zapka to lead the Dirty Birds to a 7-2 non-conference victory over the Warren Harding Raiders.

Dylan Durkos delivered the biggest blow in a six-run fifth inning with a ground ball single through the 6-5 gap that would plate two runs. SophomoreBen Wilcox would finish the explosive fifth with a single to bring across Hubbard’s final run of the inning.

Offense wasn’t always so easy for the Eagles in this one as the Dirty Birds didn’t record their first hit until their huge fifth. The Harding pitcher, Elijah Taylor, was grooving into the inning, striking out six through his first four innings of work.

The right-handed junior Zapka, who struck out six and didn’t allow a single walk in the ballgame, threw his third complete game of the season and improved his record to 3-0. But after he allowed a solo home run to his pitching counterpart, Elijah Taylor, in the fourth, his back appeared to be against the wall but don’t tell Mikey that. “I knew I just had to stay confident and shake it off,” Zapkasaid. “I’m not the type of guy who lets a homerun get to him.”

Zapka would allow another run in the fifth before putting the clamps on the Raiders, only giving up two hits while striking out two in his last two innings of work.

JARVIS TOSSES NO HITTER AS HUBBARD PREVAILS

HUBBARD, Ohio

Evan Jarvis threw the first no-hitter on the Hubbard Eagle’s new baseball field built in 2016. Jarvis struck out 13 in a 16-1 victory over the Brookfield Warriors.

It isn’t too often you see a no-hitter with a run given up, but after Jarvis would hit a Brookfield batter to lose his perfect game in the 4th, the Hubbard defense would make an error and allow the runner to score.

Not only was Jarvis getting it done on the defensive side of things, but he was producing at the plate as well. Finishing 1-for-2 on the day, Jarvis had a game high 3 RBIs and added a double as well.

After fanning the first two batters in the top of the 5th inning, fatigue was starting to set in. Jarvis would walk the 3rd batter of the inning on 4 straight pitches and started the next hitter off with a ball. With history on his mind, Jarvis would stepoff and take a deep breath before firing three strikes for the backwards K and sealing his no-hitter.

“It’s really cool,” Jarvis said, “I was happy the few balls that did get hit got fielded and I have to thank my team for that.” The ultimate teammate, Jarvis is no stranger to the big stage. A starter since his freshman season, the right-handedsenior came into the day feeling good, saying he knew in the very first inning that he was bringing it.

HUBBARD EARNS SEASON SPLIT WITH INDIANS

GIRARD, Ohio

Twenty-four hours removed from completing the upset over the Lady Eagles, Girard played host to Hubbard in their second matchup of the season. With a sour taste from yesterday’s loss still looming, the Hubbard Lady Eagles came out firing and looking for revenge.

After a pop out to start the top of the second inning, the Eagles loaded the bases thanks to two singles and a walk. Hubbard’s Jordyn Juilleratwould then line one into center field to bring across two runs.

The Lady Eagles then loaded the bases again for the second time in the inning when Emily Filickywould lay down a bunt single. After an error by the Girard defense, a single from Phoebe Rusnak scored the fourth and fifth runs of the inning for Hubbard still with just one away.

Before the inning was said and done, singles from Gillian Ryser and Izzy O’Brien would plate runs as well as an error from the Girard defense, giving the Lady Eagles a total of 9 runs for the inning.

Giving up two in the bottom half of the inning, Hubbard carried a seven-run lead into the third. Keeping the bats hot, the Lady Eagles plated four additional runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Sydney Bowser.

Girard’s defense would tighten up following the big second and third innings for Hubbard. The Indians would only give up five hits for the rest of the game and allowed no more runs on the day.

Keeping up with their defensive success, the bats would also come alive for Girard. The Indians would plate two runs in the third as well as another in the fourth. Trying to mount their big comeback in the sixth, the Indians would single four times in the inning, plating three runs, but would still fall short, giving the Lady Eagles the win 13-8.

INDIANS PULL OFF UPSET OF HUBBARD

HUBBARD, Ohio

Trying to stay perfect in the conference, the Hubbard Lady Eagles played host to the Girard Indians. Both offenses would start slow is this one, failing to produce any runs through the first 2 innings.

Although it took them a while to get started, the Girard Indians would explode in the top of the third. After two singles and an error to load the bases, Sophie Griffith doubled off the center field wall to bring in 2 runs.

After a strikeout by Girard’s K Culver, another error from the Hubbard defense allowed the Indians third run of the inning to come across. Then a fly ball to center field off the bat of T Owens would allow Griffith to cross homeplatebefore the trail runner was thrown out at third.

The Lady Eagles wouldn’t respond until later in the fourth inning. With a single to start the inning by Gillian Ryser, senior Haley Croyle would single to right field to bring in Ryser. Croyle would later come across to score thanks to a single by J Juillerat.

The two conference foes would trade runs in the fifth and sixth, making the score 5-3 as they headed into the final inning of play. In the top of the seventh inning the error bug would again bite the Lady Eagles as they allowed their fourth run off the game off an error.

Unable to rally in their final half inning of play, the Lady Eagles dropped their first conference game of the season, losing 6-3.

EAGLES EYE BIG WIN OVER GIRARD

HUBBARD, Ohio

Over the past 6 years, the Hubbard Baseball program has amassed a record of 10-0 against the Girard Indians. Through post season bouts and early morning double headers, the Eagles have never stumbled against the Indians, and they were not looking to end their streak today.

Looking to turn things around from the 18-3 loss Saturday against West Branch, the Eagles started hot at the dish. With two men on and only one out, Jake Hettrick would smash a double into left field, plating one and advancing the other to third. Not being forgotten, the runner would be brought in thanks to a sacrifice fly via Hayden Fox.

Trailing by 2, the Indians loaded the bases without even recording a single hit in the top of the second. Hubbard pitcher Dylan Durkoswalked the first batter of the inning before hitting the second and walking the third. With his back against the wall, Durkos struck out the next two batters he faced then would force the third to pop out to get himself out of a jam. “I was just trying topump strikesDurkos said of working out of the jam, “I knew if they made contact my defense behind me is solid.”

After a scoreless bottom half of the second and top half of the third, the Eagles would strike again in the bottom of the third. Scoring his second and third RBIs of the game, it was Hayden Fox who delivered a single up the middle to double the Eagle lead.

Hubbard wouldn’t stop their scoring there, as they would once again double their lead with a big 4 run inning in the fourth. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single off the bat of Jake Hettrick and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Kali. The other two runs would score via error and a bases loaded hit by pitch.

The sixth inning would spell the end of the night for the Girard Indians. Already trailing by 8, the Indians would allow 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth, bringing the score to 10-0 and making the game a whitewash.

Hubbard’s Durkos had his way with the Girard Indians, allowing them to only collect two hits the entirety of the game. Durkos would also strikeout 9 in his 6-inning shutout.

HOT CORNER WITH SPECIAL GUEST SARA MICHALOWSKI-MARINO

Welcome back inside another week of the Hot Corner! We had such an exciting week of softball on YSN, and the weather was beautiful for the whole week.  We have a lot to talk about in this edition with a high school recap of week 2, more updates on YSN alums, and this week’s special guest Sara Michalowski-Marino.

High School Recap:

We can not start this recap without bringing up the perfect games of Bri Callow.  The McDonald ace threw two perfect games in the week, yes 2! I got to interview Bri this week as part of YSN;s player profiles series.  She gave some great insight into her mindset during the perfect games.  Some people might think it is a cliché to say “pitch by pitch” but with Bri it is legitimate.  She already has 98 strikeouts on the season.  Her spin, and location makes her so tough to hit.  When i got to see her pitch this week, her swing and miss rate was off the charts.

A couple of freshman in the area have really showed up strong so far this season.  Mackenzi Gamble has turned into a legitimate ace for Columbiana, giving them depth inside the circle.  Gamble leads the team in innings pitched with 28.2.  Her ERA is 1.47.  Gamble brings velocity, and maybe the highest velocity I have seen from a freshman in quite some time.  It is hard for a lot of hitters at this level to catch up to her riseball.  What Gamble brings to the Clippers will really show up in tournaments.  The ability to be able to throw two different arms becomes crucial down the stretch against high quality teams in the late rounds of a bracket.

A freshman that is doing it on the other side of the field in the batter’s box is Poland’s Mary Brant.  She is bringing a feared bat into the lineup of the Bulldogs.  Brant leads the team in almost every offensive category.  Brant has a batting average of .625, she has 6 HR,  and 18 RBI.  She has done all this in just 7 games.  It is really incredible to see a young player not phased at all by the step up to the varsity level.  This week, i am really looking forward to see how South Range standout Bree Kohler pitches to Brant.

Speaking of Kohler, she also threw a perfect game this week for the Raiders during their trip to Myrtle Beach.  A very productive trip to the beach too.  The Raiders went 5-1 and continued to get contributions from everyone in the lineup.  6 Raider hitters have at least 7 RBI, and 4 of them have more than 10.

Coming into this season, i think the softball community expected Poland and South Range to be the frontrunners for the NE8.  And while those teams are having fantastic starts, i think Hubbard has officially entered the party.  The Eagles pushed Boardman to the brink this week, getting walk offed 2-1, but bounced back with a double header sweep of a very good West Branch team.  The Eagles have seven hitters that are currently batting above .400.  The lineup is relentless, and there are no breaks for pitchers.  It really gives the feel of a college level lineup, where you can’t sleep on anyone 1-9.  They don’t slouch in the circle though either, the Eagles have 3 pitchers that have given them significant innings.  Hubbard’s team ERA is 3.19.  It will be an interesting week for the Eagles with games against Girard and Canfield on the slate.

YSN Alums

Champion’s Allison Smith is keeping her ERA below 2.50 with a total of 2.33. She got her first taste of the Buckeyes rivalry with Michigan this weekend.  Although the Buckeyes lost 3 of 4 games, Smith pitched well in the series.  In an interview with YSN during her senior year at Champion, Smith talked about how much she was looking forward to the rivalry with Michigan. Another Champion grad Sophie Howell struck out 11 in 6 innings against Green Bay this weekend.  She gave up 3 ER and currently sits at a season ERA of 4.71.  South Range’s Caragyn Yanek got her 6th win in the circle for Findlay, she threw 4.0 IP and struck out 6.  Poland’s Brooke Bobbey went 1-2 in St Bonaventure’s 8-0 loss to Fordham over the weekend.  Another former Poland Bulldog, Kaili Gross is 2-2 in the circle for Case Western Reserve with an ERA of 3.00.  Former Louisville Leopard Sydney McKeever has scored 5 runs for Toledo, but is still looking for her first base hit.  Toledo is a deep team, so Sydney hasn’t gotten too many opportunities to this point with just 4 at bats, but they are using her on the base paths, and she is doing whatever it takes to make an impact on the team.

Special Guest: Sara Michalowski-Marino

No. 18 Mizzou Tigers vs. No. 24 Auburn Tigers at Mizzou Softball Stadium in Columbia, Mo. on Friday, March 27, 2021.
Zach Bland/Mizzou Athletics

I am so happy to add another coach to the special guests of the Hot Corner.  Sara is the assistant coach at Missouri, and brings some great insight into this week’s edition.  Sara is now in her third year on staff at Missouri.  When head coach Larissa Anderson got hired, Sara was the first hire she made as an assistant.  Michalowski is familiar with how coach Anderson operates, she was Anderson’s assistant at Hofstra from 2017-2018.  She also played for Anderson at Hofstra from 2008-2011.  Coach Michalowski made the most out of her opportunity to coach at the SEC level, in 2019 she was named NFCA Assistant Coach of the Year.  When Michalowski was hired Anderson said “her passion, knowledge, dedication, and work ethic are what I’m looking for in additions to our staff.” As a player, Michalowski left Hofstra as a top ten program performer in career HR and RBI.  She is a Philadelphia native that played at Archbishop Ryan High School before joining Hofstra. It was great to catch up with coach Michalowski and get her thoughts on high school softball, and highlight her softball journey.  I want to thank Missouri Softball SID Paul McCaw for setting up the interview.
